Rob: strap in

Paul: and hang on!  Episode 336 of the Polite Society Podcast starts right now.

Show intro music.

Seg 1- Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- Went to the range and practiced.  Spoke on Lock and Load radio with Bill Frady on Friday.  Mentored a student at a first shots course for medical professionals.  That taught me a few new tricks.  My browning 22 pistol eats federal but not American Eagle.. which are made by the same company.

My Florida carry permit came in the mail.

Gary – Ordered Sherry’s Concealment Solutions holster and we did some reloading practice with speed loaders.

Paul – Did some more looking at campers this morning. not much gun related. been absorbing the news of the week.  Looking at ordering a new belt for Susan to use at the Kathy Jackson class.

Rob- Did you consider Jason’s belts?

There are 2 things that I want to address before we go off into the news segment, although they both are technically news that relate to guns.

First is the statement by the pope that came out just about the time we were supposed to go to air last week and so we weren’t able to properly vett the story to make sure that it was a real story.  It was a real story.

I was born and raised in the Catholic church. I now consider myself a Christian not connected to any particular church. I believe in the bible and not what people have inserted as “doctrine”  I would like to read some of the pope’s comments as reported on Ammoland.com

Pope Francis spoke with a group of young people at a rally of thousands at the end of the first day of his trip to the Italian city of Turin.

Francis started by attacking the Right to Keep and Bear Arms as well as accusing the allies during World War Two of being complicit in the killing of Jews, Christians and homosexuals.

Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry, saying.

“If you trust only men you have lost,” he told the young people in a long, rambling talk about war, trust and politics after putting aside his prepared address.

“It makes me think of … people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn’t it?” he said to applause.

He also criticized those who invest in weapons industries (gun owners), saying “duplicity is the currency of today … they say one thing and do another.”

Francis also built on comments he has made in the past about events during the first and second world wars.

He spoke of the “tragedy of the Shoah,” using the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.

“The great powers had the pictures of the railway lines that brought the trains to the concentration camps like Auschwitz to kill Jews, Christians, homosexuals, everybody. Why didn’t they bomb (the railway lines)? (end of ammoland story)

There is something that I believe his holiness has forgotten, that evil does exist in the world. Edmund Burke is quoted as saying “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The pope seems to be like the liberals who are at work right here in America, he thinks that if we click our heels three time and say there is no place like home that everything will be alright.

Ladies and gentlemen, everything will not be alright. American, and indeed world history is replete with examples of disarmament leads to slavery or even worse death.

I am sorry that a man (and the pope is a man) is in charge of the catholic church that I grew up in and had a great deal of respect for. Popes are supposed to serve a lifetime, I will never wish ill on any human, however I can only hope that this man decides like his predecessor that the papacy is too much for him and retire early. I would like to say to my fellow Christians to pray like it depends on God and prepare like it depends on you.

The armory of the Swiss Guard who protect the Vatican.

Secondly there was a major ruling from the Supreme court late in the week that proclaimed through the 14th amendment that all states must allow gay marriage. What does this have to do with guns? Well there are many that are saying that with the language in the ruling that the 14th amendment would also require a concealed carry permit issued in one state to be accepted by all. And I have to say that there are strong arguments for this. I would like to caution our listeners strongly, that right now that is a THEORY, not tested in court. I will not be the test case, I encourage you not to as well. The SAF is tuning up right now to introduce lawsuits to that effect.

I am going to insert a live promo about upcoming training classes here.

Seg 2- News

Police chief advocates civilian disarmament in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Two Tampa Bay Florida real estate agents were robbed at gunpoint this month.  One was shackled at her hands and feet while the attacker made ransom demands to the victim’s husband.  Police admit that agents have a dangerous job.  St. Petersburg police Chief Tony Holloway said real estate agents, particularly women, should not arm themselves because the criminal would only take their gun and use it against them.

Paul- Wait a minute.  Female agents are the same as any other women in their ability to defend themselves.

Rob- Maybe Florida laws are different.  I have a Florida carry license instructor to talk with us.

(Insert recording here)

Dramatic Rise in Crime After UK Ban Guns

The blog Extrano’s Alley has an interesting analysis of the increase in violent crime after the UK’s total ban on handguns and severe restriction on all other firearms. The ban was a knee-jerk reaction to their Dunblane massacre. It is certainly interesting reading in light of the efforts attempting to capitalize on the Charleston tragedy. The link can be found in our show notes.

NY State Residents Disobeying Cuomo’s Registration Scheme

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”  From his cell in the Birmingham jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote those words that are being taken to heart by New York State residents. Only 24 thousand of New York State’s 20 million residents have registered their so-called assault weapons since Cuomo’s SAFE act took effect in 2013. Less than 45 thousand rifles have been registered. Law enforcement estimates there are 1 million assault weapons in the state. The citizens are engaging in civil disobedience even though failure to register is a felony, punishable by up to four years in prison.

Cuomo rammed his SAFE Act though the legislature weeks after the Sandy Hook tragedy. The act was an anti-gun activist’s dream: a ban on high-capacity magazines, universal background checks, stolen gun reporting, safe storage, mental health provisions, warrantless firearm seizures, ammunition sales checks, as well as the key registration requirement. Tellingly, NONE of the provisions, even if followed exactly by the madman, would have prevented the shooting at Sandy Hook.

“Many people have been calling for a full repeal of the SAFE Act. It would appear the people have just bypassed the legislature and simply repealed it on their own,” said Tom King, of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association. Communities and LEOs outside of New York City seem to be ignoring or openly challenging the Governor’s draconian law.

While we cannot tell New York’s residents to resist this unjust law – that would be illeeeeeeegal – we can certainly applaud the State’s residents who are adhering to Thomas Jefferson’s words; “If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so.”

Rob- 950 THOUSAND New York gun owners told the Governor to shove it.  Cuomo is only the Governor of Albany and New York city, but not the rest of the state.
More Anti-Gun Stupidity

Leading Democrat adviser Bob Shrum led with his tongue when he opined that the Emanuel shooting would have been a “horror” if the black parishioners were armed. On MSNBC’s The Ed Show, Shrum said QUOTE “I cannot imagine the horror that could have occurred if people were sitting around with concealed weapons, this thing started, and you have a full-scale gunfight.” END QUOTE

The mind boggles. Experience shows that resisting a madman significantly decreases the death toll. Even if unsuccessful, the nine still would have died. And the concealed carrier would have died on their feet, rather than on their knees.

Taking Shrum at his word, the advisor to Teddy Kennedy, Carter, Gore and Kerry would rather see the parishioners completely disarmed, defenseless and good little victims, rather than fighting for their lives. As insane as this sounds, this IS one of the anti’s core beliefs. They believe that it is somehow morally preferable to be the victim, rather than acting in self-defense. As rational beings, we absolutely reject this dehumanizing belief.

Rob- Gun prohibition is a superstition, and the anti-rights advocates live in a fantasy world.

Bill to Restrict Home Assembled Firearms Proposed
Another in our Cavalcade of Legislative Stupidity, this one somehow not authored by Carolyn Maloney, is the Home-Assembled Firearms Restriction Act of 2015. This bill would prohibit of the sale of certain firearm receiver castings or blanks, assault weapon parts kits, and machine gun parts kits (what?) and prohibit the marketing of the items on any medium of electronic communications. The parts would be banned as hazardous products under the Consumer Product Safety Act. Enforcement would come via the Federal Trade Commission. It would eliminate the home hobbyist who assembles a completely legal firearm out of commercially available parts.

The bill mentions semi-automatic rifles and semi-automatic pistols, and is an unique thrust in the effort to disarm Americans. Our response should be the same. However, the amount of tar and feathers involved would certainly be an environmental disaster.  HR- 376

Collectible Firearms Protection Act.

Not all legislation sinks to the level of Carolyn Maloney or Mario Cuomo. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) recently introduced H.R. 2611, the “Collectible Firearms Protection Act.” This bill would reverse the Obama/ Kerry State Department’s decision blocking the reimportation of M1 Garands and M1 Carbines from South Korea. The completely legal firearms would then be sold commercially to the American people. The Obama administration also opposes legislation to allow the CMP to sell the Army’s excess 1911s. All these firearms were paid for by the American taxpayer, and we would like to remind our rulers that we own them.

You can contact your U.S. Representative to support this legislation by using the NRA/ILA’s  “Write Your Lawmakers” tool or calling (202) 224-3121.  You can also register your opinion at Popvox.com

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker To Sign Two Bills Expanding Gun Rights

In a clear victory for gun-rights advocates, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker signed bills to eliminate the state’s 48-hour waiting period for gun purchases and to allow off-duty police officers to carry concealed weapons on public school grounds.

Congratulations Cheese-Heads!

Rob-  Let me get this right.  The school staff would call the police if the school was attacked.  They call the police because the police carry guns and could stop the attack.  Somehow, this bill was considered a great act of political courage to allow the police to carry their guns in school before the attack?  This is not a moment for congratulations but for shame.  I want to find the idiot politician who told the police they could not go armed in our public schools.

No guns in Post Office parking lots

(Denver, Colorado) – In yet another decision that thumbs its nose at the Supreme Court’s landmark D.C. v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago rulings, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals held today that the Second Amendment does not protect gun rights outside of one’s home. The case, Bonidy v. United States Postal Service, challenged the statute (39 C.F.R. § 232.1(l),) which prohibits the storage and carriage of firearms on USPS property. The district court decision found that the law was unconstitutional as applied to its prohibition on guns in parking lots, but not the ban on carry inside government buildings.

Gary – As I was reading this my thought was what about the people that are walking to all prohibited locations. Don’t they have the right to self-defense?

“The possession, carrying and use of firearms require not only training and skill, but intelligence and responsibility. When persons act with deficiency in intelligence and responsibility, it can be both dangerous and unlawful.” Police Chief Leonard Papania of Gulfport, MS said.

Doug Ritter–  http://kniferights.org/ at 4 central time

Doug Ritter is Chairman and Executive Director of knife rights.  Welcome back to the show, Doug.  Knife rights are never safe when the legislature is in session.  You’ve had some wonderful successes this year.  Please tell our listeners about them.

Maine, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas pre-emption.

Knife with a CCW, so you could carry a gun.. but not a knife in Illinois?

Work to do in New York, even when republicans did not support a pro-knife bill.  Massachusetts, New Jersey,

What do you think of Evan Nappen’s book.

Carl Chinnhttp://www.carlchinn.com/ at 4:30 central time.

You’ve studied violence in Churches.  You were on the scene for a violent attack in the lobby of Focus on the Family.  You also were working at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs when it was attacked.  Since then you’ve kept an exhaustive list of violent attacks that occur on church property.

Tell us about the path a church takes to address physical security.  What are the steps to success?  I’m guessing the subject gets brought to the church board or leadership team.  What happens next?

Is an active defense similar to concerns the church already faces such as medical first responders and physical security?

The church leadership gathers information to understand the problem?

They select staff to address it?

Staff brings them a proposal?

Outside training?

On site training?

Ongoing recruitment?

What does the church have to do to succeed long term?

I was at a large local church, and to put one security person behind each gathering would take 20 volunteers.  What about the men’s group that meets mid week?  The new mom’s group?  A successful church is filled with life all the time.  That means you need volunteers from every group.

We’ve had almost a thousand attacks on churches in the last 5 years.  To me that is a wake up call.  Talk about the pastors and leadership teams who won’t address security.  What excuses do they use to justify inaction?

Why do security teams fail long term?

Dan Roberts-

New Jersey Senator Steve Sweeney faces a well deserved recall drive that started yesterday.  An hour after the New Jersey Second Amendment Society announced where they would rally to start the recall, the venue owner called them up and cancelled on them.  They had that venue and date reserved for the last two months.  Several other venues refused the group fearing political retribution from the democrat controlled bureaucrats.

350 people showed up to collect signatures.  It was raining on the signature gatherers as they went house to house.  Many homes were empty  since the power has been out in some areas for several days.  Surprisingly, some union members and government employees were eager to sign the recall while anyone who needed a permit to operate their business refused to sign.  About a quarter of the people on the list signed the petition to recall Senator Sweeney.

“When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”  and New Jersey citizens are afraid of their government.

Segment 4 DGUs

Domino’s Driver Shoots Assailant
Just after midnight, a Hollywood, Florida Domino’s driver was forced to defend his life with a firearm. Two men attacked the driver in a robbery attempt. The driver pulled his gun and fired six shots at the men, killing one of them. Breitbart News reports that at least eight Domino’s drivers had been shot–three of those killed–since the start of 2012. Many more have been assaulted, kidnapped or raped.

Domino’s Pizza will not comment on the ongoing investigation. Domino’s continues their policy of barring drivers from being armed for self-defense. We continue to feel there are other pizza restaurants.

Benihana Shoot-Out
The North Dallas Benihana’s parking lot was the scene of an armed robbery and  shootout this week. Two people were leaving the upscale Japanese restaurant when they were approached by a man asking for a lighter. The man then slipped on a mask and pulled a gun from his waistband. A victim retrieved his firearm from his vehicle and six to eight shots were exchanged. The robber was pronounced dead at an area hospital, the victim is in stable condition.

Both men were young black males. It is not known if this was a targeted crime or random. Police are focusing on a white Camaro in the parking lot, found with a handgun nearby. Neither police nor Benihana employees are forthcoming. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Homeowner Shoot Armed Car Burglar
A Milwaukee, Wisconsin man was forced to shoot a car burglar in self defense.  The man challenged a thief burglarizing his car. The thief pulled a gun and the  car owner pulled one right back and shot. The thief ran away and was arrested in an area hospital. The DA will decide if charges will be pressed against the car owner.

Police Arrive to Find a Hog-Tied Suspect
While not strictly a DGU, the following shows that we are the weapon, the gun – or a vase – are the tools.

A Kenosha, Wisconsin man heard “that noise” very early in the morning. He found a man climbing through an upstairs window, who asked the home-owner if he wanted his grass cut. Justifiably outraged at the aggressive sales tactic, the homeowner brained the door-to-door salesman with a nearby vase. Police arrived to find the man hog-tied with a garden hose. The twenty-two year old is charged with burglary, theft and disorderly conduct. He is also the suspect in a recent string of local burglaries.

While we never want to be in a self-defense situation, the ability to smack a pushy salesman, even a pretend one, is certainly tempting.

We post each of our news and defensive gun use articles at Polite Society Podcast.com  Please take a minute and share them with a friend.

Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

Rob- It has been a busy week at the slow facts blog.  I wrote four articles covering the murders in Charleston and having guns in church.  I also posted a fairly long article talking about the marketing aspects of gun control.

Anti-rights advocates offer an emotional appeal to an idealized fantasy they call gun control. The ideology of disarmament has many aspects that make it easy to sell.

Those articles are up at Ammoland, Clash Daily, and on my blog at Slowfacts dot wordpress dot com.

We would like to thank Charlie Foxtrot for writing up show notes for us. Even though you don’t hear him on the air he is a big part of what you get to hear. look him up at not one more gun law dot blog spot dot com
