Seg 1- Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)
GARY – What training do you have coming up? My next class is an Illinois FCCL certification course on September 19&20 for the full 16 hour course or Sunday the 20th for 8 hours if you meet the prerequisites. You can sign up on my website www.FirearmSI.com. Of course last weekend I was in the Cornered Cat class with the added bonus of a handgun retention class with DON STAHLNECKER
JOHN – The classes I teach at WCU started this week so I’ve been pretty busy with that. I did meet with a client yesterday and our conversation turned to guns. Turns out Tom qualified Expert with the M16A1 when he was a Combat Engineer in the Army Reserve in the 70s.
The class with Paul Carlson and Grant Cunningham in North Carolina tentatively scheduled for this fall that Doc Wesson and I were trying to put together is being put on hold. I think we may try for the Spring instead. Doc’s work schedule and not enough solid interest contributed to this.
RACHEL – my sister’s wedding yesterday. Still trying to catch up on sleep from the last few weeks and organize my life for this fall. Made all my reservations for GRPC! Got an email invitation to their range day event – is anyone else doing that? I might…
SEAN – I shot an IDPA match yesterday! I need a better ammo budget. That’s really a lot of fun.
PAUL – Cornered Cat class. Improved although I only did a bit of shooting on Sunday. Unlike Rob, I need to add more live fire. I found some things that make my grouping a LOT better.

Chief Craig Effect: Detroit Citizens Arming Themselves In Face of Rising Crime Emailed in by Listener Anthony L
On the mean streets of Detroit, embattled citizens are arming themselves for their own protection with the approval and support of Police Chief James Craig. In a city plagued by crime, unemployment, shrinking police numbers and decades of single party rule, many of the remaining citizens are trying to take back their city. Handgun registrations and CCW permits have increased notably.
“There’s definitely been a “Chief Craig” effect,” said Rick Ector, a firearms instructor, business owner, blogger and friend of this show. His support and endorsement has been helpful. Ector said that he and other instructors have seen a steady rise in locals looking to get a permit, to protect themselves either on the street or in their homes. Ector noted that legally armed residents are having an effect. “Home invasions have gone down,” he said. “A huge reason was that there was a huge spate of homeowners using their guns against intruders. More people have guns and it’s making burglars cautious.”
Rick said women are driving the growth in his business. “It used to be that we would only have one or two women in a class,” he said. “Now we are seeing much, much more. In the largely African-American city, residents are increasingly supportive of civilian armament. “If anyone should have the right or need to carry a gun, it should be the African-American community,” Philip Smith, founder of the National African American Gun Association, told Reuters.
Seems like this is one more lesson that can be learn from the rise and fall of Detroit. If only they were willing to listen.
Sean – The real terror of this is the lack of control. Anti-gunners don’t want low crime, they want high control.
Rachel – I appreciate those who make the gun world much easier for women to enter and thrive in.
John – what threatens the gun controllers even more that it is African Americans
Paul – going to reach out to Rick Ector this week for next weekend’s show
An Alabama Sheriff just doesn’t get it
Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor thinks that regardless of whether you qualify for a concealed carry permit that HE should be the one who decides if you get it. Taylor was quoted in a Breitbart piece saying that “We know things that the computer can’t tell us. We know things about our citizens. We know who’s going through a divorce. We know who’s in a bad time, who may be drinking too much, who may be abusive, but hasn’t necessarily crossed the line of a crime. But in our opinion, they don’t need a pistol permit” This following a theater shooting that we covered a few weeks ago where the gunman got a pistol despite several disqualifying factors that should have stopped him in the NICS check system. What the sheriff didn’t say is that the same things that should have stopped the gunman from getting a gun through NICS also would have allowed any sheriff to disallow the carry permit.
John – this makes me think of the NC sheriffs and the pistol permit system.
Sean – So he’s saying that he has a list of citizens he’s put on double secret probation?
Rachel – I know many people who would think this is a great idea. They don’t realize that this line of thinking will come back to bite them….and their grandkids.
Gary – They are doing this in Illinois, we are shall issue but any law enforcement agency can deny permits.
Sean – Judge
Gabby Giffords and Starman Kelly Redefine Gun Control as Gun Responsibility
In an Orwellian redefinition of the term, Gabby Gifford and her opportunistic husband Mark “Starman” Kelly are claiming that they are not supporters of ‘gun-control’, but rather favor ‘gun responsibility’. Despite never meeting a gun-control effort they didn’t like, they now say they do not support ‘gun-control’ in the traditional sense of the phrase. With a profound grasp of the obvious, Kelly said that nobody likes to be controlled. He went on to say that the gun control group he and Giffords launched simply supports “basic principles” to keep communities safer.
This is an indication of the success the gun-rights community has earned; the term “gun-control’ now has a negative connotation with most of the public. The terms gun-safety and now gun-responsibility are simply efforts to get around the public’s evolving understanding. Giffords and Kelly’s statement is a nuanced, and deceitful, acknowledgement of our gains.
As Kurt Schlichter said to the antis; “Screw You”. Giffords and Kelly are urged to again substitute a word.
Gary – Government forcing ‘Gun Responsibility’ IS ‘Gun Control’
John – I’m reminded of our interview with Jeff Knox regarding the VA and SSA. Shouldn’t Gabby Giffords actually be a prohibited person due to brain injuries.
Paul – unfortunately I saw in the news this week that Giffords has had a US Navy ship named after her. I think that it is unfortunate that a ship made for fighting is named for a person who is against our rights.
Sean – Gun Ban, Gun Control, Gun Safety, Gun Responsibility: You can say poop, feces, or night soil, but no matter what you call it, it tastes just the same .
Rachel- this is true Sean, but it’s also true that those who control the narrative have a significant edge. Maybe we’ve successfully given gun “control” a negative connotation…let’s also make sure we’re the ones who successfully define gun responsibility.
Senators Ask For Extra-legal Delay of Firearms Purchases
In a coordinated anti-rights assault, thirteen anti-gun U.S. senators have asked Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s to refuse to release firearms to customers whose background checks aren’t completed within three business days. Michael Bloomberg’s Demanding Mommies is also making the same demand of Gander Mountain and Sportsman’s Warehouse. And, U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and Brady Campaign president Dan Gross urged the same from firearm dealers nationwide. Thankfully, the retailers have so far not responded to the demands.
The largely ineffective Brady Handgun Violence Act of 1993 requires initial background checks to be completed within three business days. The three day limit is there so as to not violate the Second Amendment toooooo much. If the automated check is not completed in time, the retailer is allowed to release the firearm. If granted, these extralegal requests would deny a fundamental right as the result of bureaucratic delay. The threat of deliberate delays is clear.
We applaud the retailer’s decision to resist the pressures of the legislators and activists. We support those that support us.
John – I have just three little words for these retailers – Smith. And. Wesson. They should remember what happened S&W when they entered an agreement with the Clinton Administration.
Sean – The 3 day limit was put there on purpose…
Rachel- everybody, do your part. Be proactive in getting to retailers and encouraging them to support our rights.
Gary- I carry these
Sean – No Secret boycotts
John – Delta and their ban on trophies
AMERICANS SUBDUE GUNMAN ON FRENCH TRAIN
One serves in the Air Force, another recently served in Afghanistan in the National Guard, another is studying physical therapy in Sacramento – and these 3 Americans are being hailed as heroes for tackling & disarming a gunman they happened to encounter on a high-speed Amsterdam-Paris train.
Air Force serviceman Spencer Stone remained hospitalized Saturday after being stabbed, though the Pentagon said the injury was not life-threatening. another passenger was wounded by a handgun in the attack.
The French Interior Minister said the American “were particularly courageous and showed great bravery in very difficult circumstances.
The attacker did not fire his automatic weapon but did wound one man with a handgun and another with a blade. The suspect is a 26-year-old Moroccan.
It’s unclear whether there was a political motive to the gunman’s actions. Counterterrorism police are leading the investigation and are questioning the attacker,
Sean – Let’s not forget the fourth member of our band of “have a go heroes,” a
Gary – I have to quote the NRA “Good guys with guns stop bad guys with guns”
Paul – A reminder that it is weren’t for the French in the 1770’s we would likely still have a monarch

14 Year Old Defends Siblings From Home Invaders
Faced with two home invaders, a 14 year old did everything he had to do: He hid his six year old twin siblings in closets, got his father’s cell phone…. and he grabbed his rifle. When one of the intruders opened the closet where he was hiding, the thug found himself not facing the expected frightened child, but the muzzle of the young man’s firearm. “I had my gun loaded and ready to shoot, but when he saw me he just took off running,” young Andrew Mason related. Andrew’s father said “He’s excellent. He did everything perfectly. He couldn’t have done better, and he’s actually a hero,”
The proud papa had done pretty well himself. Kiewa Mason recounted that “I believe in the right to bear arms, and it’s not like he was foreign to it. We go to the shooting range quite often. We go to the Clark County (Las Vegas) shooting range quite often. Kiewa Mason said his family has practiced for this scenario.
The two thugs were videoed by the home’s security system. They are well known to the neighborhood and are expected to be arrested soon.
Our congratulations to the two Mason men; Well done, well done indeed.
Rachel – gun safety storage, authorized use
Gary – Similar law here in Illinois.
Paul – Good on the father for teaching the child that once someone is running away not to shoot.
Sean – Something jumps out at me when I look at a picture of the young man with the rifle.
Four Teenagers Shoot Homeowner and at Wife Holding a Six Month Old Baby
In a bone-chilling reminder of why we arm ourselves, a Georgia family had to endure the nightmare of a home invasion by four armed men. Michael Lash answered a teen’s plea for the loan of a car jack. Once the door was opened, four males forced their way inside. In the fracas, Lash was shot twice in the legs. The thugs then fired at his wife holding their six-month-old daughter. The shot fortunately missed. Their two year old son was unharmed in the incident.
Whitney Lash was talking to a 911 operator before the first shots rang out. However, the cops arrived far too late to apprehend the suspects, who remain at large. The horrifying 911 recording can be found at the link in the show notes.
Listeners are reminded to NEVER open the door to someone they do not know. If they appear official, confirm their identity by a call to their organization. And please take heed of the many stories we present of armed homeowners successfully defending their lives with a firearm.
Gary – Four invaders and they want to limit our magazine capacity to 7 or 10 rounds.
Sean – Locked screen door. Barriers between you and intruders.
Sean – Pretext
Defensive Gun Use: Shop Owner Refuses To Be Robbed, Takes Robber’s Gun And Shoots Him With It
Andrew Hepburn was lucky when two robbers entered his CAD Auto Parts in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Lucky because he was able to take away one of robbers’ guns and use it to defend himself.
Conrad Bloomfield, 36, of Lauderhill and his accomplice entered Hepburn’s auto parts shop and demanded he get on the ground while they began robbing the shop. When Hepburn was slow to get on the ground, Bloomfield began to pistol whip him. It was then that Hepburn took the robber’s gun and turned it on him. He ended up shooting Bloomfield 5 times in the chest. The accomplice did wound Hepburn in the exchange of gunfire. Fortunately, Hepburn is expected to have a full recovery while Bloomfield is in critical condition.
John – this is another story illustrating why you need to be armed.
Sean – Saw this video
Rachel- fighting is a mindset: the will to survive
Paul – never give up if you still have consciousness
Ever since Illinois became the last state in the country to allow concealed carry, we’ve seen reports of legally-armed citizens defending themselves against armed criminals. Here is another one of those stories that happened late Thursday. A 24-year-old man, legally carrying a concealed firearm, was walking down the street with a woman when two suspects approached them with a handgun and announced that they were being robbed . . .
As a response, the 24-year-old drew his firearm, as did one of the armed thugs. Both men fired. The permit holder was shot in the leg, while the suspect was shot in the chest.
Both were taken to the same hospital where the permit holder is in stable condition. The suspect, however, is in critical condition and, if he makes it through his injuries, will be facing numerous charges.
Paul – shot placement
Sean – What constitutes a “Win?”
Rachel- too often, it’s not about the wallet. That may be the pretext, but things can escalate quickly.
Paul – I carry 2 wallets
Rachel- there’s always the wallet holster…
Sean – I ain’t here for no gunfight

Listener e-mail discussion

(Caution! wall of text below. Feel free to edit as necessary for brevity as desired)
I have been meaning to drop you one of those oh-so coveted fan emails for a while now but marriage, a new job, and moving to North Carolina got in the way of things. I wanted to express my appreciation to everyone for all the time and effort put into the show each week. Those of you on air and those who work behind the scenes (I’m talking about you Charlie Foxtrot) are doing amazing work. I eagerly anticipate the release of each show. I savor the knowledgeable,
insightful and sometimes irreverent commentary you and your guests provide. You are my go-to podcast for my short commute each day.
I am a native born Minnesotan so a comment in episode 343 caught my attention. You mentioned a very wise hesitancy to render aid to the aggressor in a DGU that happened in Minnesota. I know Paul travels through the “California of the north” so I thought I’d mention this.
Some states have laws with severe penalties that may be interpreted to require you to foolishly put your life in danger a second time and render aid if you’ve used deadly force to stop someone threatening your life.
Of course there are conditional statements in the verbiage of the law making use of what I like to call “lawyer speak” (a.k.a. weasel words) that can be interpreted to allow you to not rendering physical aid if you are still in fear of your life. However, as we have seen there is a concerted effort by the media and most liberals to misinterpret these passages in a way that is NOT advantageous to a victim who chooses to defend themselves. The _potential_ exists that you may be prosecuted for not going beyond calling the cleanup crew to help someone who just tried to kill you.
I personally believe no person should ever be required by the power of the state to do more than call the police and let the trained professionals approach a violent offender. Depending on the prosecutor you could be at risk if you do not. Here is a link to the statute . I hope this helps people make an informed decision if they should ever have to do the unsavory duty of defending themselves or loved ones. https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=609.662
P.S. I’m sure John is wondering, yes for the time being, I do live in Cary, the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.

Sean – Welcome to the Massachusetts of Dixie
Paul – MAG 40
Sean – Law of Self
John – In other words, you don’t have to be Minnesota Nice to a criminal.
Next up is Bud who sent this one in
I really enjoy listening to The Polite Society Podcast. I listen every week and always check for new podcasts during the week. The DGU’s are very interesting and there are only a couple of gun shows that even discuss items like this. As much as I enjoy the show, I do have a couple of suggestions for making it even more interesting.
I would love to hear you have Dr. John Lott on the show and just let him discuss facts about gun deaths, crimes and state laws in America. It seems like every time someone has Dr. Lott on their show they only allow him to answer specific questions and then rush him to provide an answer. I always get the feeling that he had much much more to discuss, but show times didn’t allow him to speak.
If the show time doesn’t allow for Dr. Lott to discuss the details of his research, then make the time, extend the length of the show or make it a two or three part series. I’m sure that other subscribers/listeners are just as interested in his research as I am and this would provide a lot of information for gun owners to use in conversations with those on the fence about guns. I think that Massod Ayoob would be just as interesting. *** Just ask them a question or two to get the conversation started and then turn them loose.
Another guest that I’d love to hear from is someone like Michael Bloomberg or the leader of Mothers Against whatever. ** It would be interesting to hear just how people like this think and/or process information. I wouldn’t allow them to misstate the facts about guns, as a matter of fact it would be good to hear how they actually handle the facts.
These are just suggestions about shows that I believe would be highly listened to podcasts and quite possibly make national news that could put “The Polite Society Podcast” in the must listen to podcasts of many people.
John – We have had Dr. Lott on the show a while back. Perhaps it is time to get him on again.
Sean – GET GAIL!
Rachel- Wanna find out “how they actually handle the facts”? Sounds like they handle facts by avoidance…ignorance is bliss?
John – I’d love to have Shannon Watts on to explain why she opposes campus carry when her daughter goes to a school where they have campus carry.
We also got an email from Clayton
Hey folks, I heard y’all begging for emails so I decided to pipe up and educate you a bit.
While Minnesota did drop several states from our recognized reciprocity, (we only recognize permits that include live fire in the class qualification) we have been making large breakthroughs in pro gun legislation. We are moving in the right direction at a pretty good pace! While California is sliding deeper and deeper in the opposite direction.
We have no magazine capacity limit, no ammo purchase limit, no limit on number of firearms carried, our permit allows rifle and shotgun carry, no thumb safety requirement, no god forsaken bullet buttons, and we can even carry guns in the woods without a permit.
(It literally says “in the woods” in the statute. Ha) There are A LOT of hunters here.
Minnesota just legalized suppressors, hunting with them, and stripped the government from the ability to confiscate weapons during a declared emergency. (We didn’t even know they had that power since we have no earthquakes or hurricanes! Apparently a legislator snuck it in around May)
We stripped the requirement to notify the Capitol of intention to carry on grounds too. There is no language in our laws about open or concealed for our carry, so I like to open carry for comfort, speed, and to be a pleasantly polite ambassador to the public for responsibly armed citizens like us.
I know those are common things for Southerners but I just wanted to remind you we aren’t as Liberal as the “Twin Cities” want you to believe. We have nearly 200,000 issued permits here and it’s growing fast.
I’m proud to be an NRA member, (an unnamed organization) permit to carry instructor, and (an unnamed number of) guns owner!
John – Now why doesn’t MN recognize NC because we meet their class and shooting requirements.
Gary – Rob can’t be with us but he is still writing. He posted yesterday about the train shooting in France. You can see that post at https://slowfacts.wordpress.com/ John you have a new post this week right?
We would like to thank Charlie Foxtrot for writing up show notes for us. Even though you don’t hear him on the air he is a big part of what you get to hear. look his blog up at not one more gun law dot blogspot dot com
Paul: That wraps up another episode of the Polite Society Podcast. I’d like to thank Sean for joining us today. co-hosts, will you be with us next time? Rachel: yes! I’m back in the swing of things! I’m looking forward to it. Until the next time…
