Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- Bill Frady and I talked about Politics and Guns on his Lock and Load Radio program. I went to the MAG 20 classroom, a silencer shoot, NRA convention where I got to see Rachel Malone, John Richardson, Gary Daugherty and also our friends Lloyd Bailey of Armed Lutheran Radio, and Amanda Suffecool and Bob Campbell of Eye on the Target Radio.

At the NRA I saw a Huffington Post reporter be asked to leave a seminar..where the NRA welcomed me. Some journalists are more honest than others. I also took another day of medical training.

Paul – Rob was that your 1st MAG 20?

John-  I actually met Melissa Jeltsen, that HuffPo reporter, and have had an email conversation with her regarding my opposition to the term “gun violence”. I spent most of the weekend at the Asheville Gun Show working the Grass Roots North Carolina booth. Gun shows shouldn’t be scheduled on Mother’s Day/graduation weekend! Attendance was way down. I did pick up some .44 Special ammo and a custom made Nessmuk knife.

Gary

Tracy – I just picked up (literally this afternoon) a new Smith & Wesson M&P Shield .380 EZ, for my students who don’t have much hand and upper body strength. Look for my review on the gun in an upcoming episode. Next week, I have a lesson with Karl Rehn to work on my quad speed qualification for the upcoming MAG-180 next month in Wisconsin.

A woman survived a kidnapping attempt by turning her captor’s gun on him. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department received a call to respond to a fatal shooting at a gas station in Starr, South Carolina. Rodney Nixon had broken into the home of his ex-girlfriend, assaulted a man who was there, and then kidnapped his ex. However, Nixon’s car broke down and he forced a neighbor to take him and the kidnap victim in the neighbor’s car, at gunpoint. The neighbor’s car ran low on gas and they pulled into a gas station, where Nixon proceeded to refill the car. His ex-girlfriend saw her chance and got the gun away from Nixon, and then shot him in the chest with it. The case is still under investigation and no charges have yet been filed. Coroner Greg Shore said “This would have been a very bad outcome for everybody if she had not shot him.”

Gary- Would-be robber Arkeem Bennett chose the wrong victim when he produced a handgun to stop and threaten a Florida CCW holder. While returning home from the movies with a family member, a legal CCW holder in Gainesville Florida was confronted by Bennett, who attempted to rob him at gunpoint while his accomplice waited in a car. Unfortunately for Bennet, his intended victim drew and fired, striking Bennett several times. The CCW holder called 911 and Police attended the scene. The police later said that Bennett was later found dead, and that there was no prior connection between Bennett and his intended victim. They are keeping the identity of the CCW holder secret, and it is “likely” that he will not be charged.

John- A 23-year old woman used her legal firearm to defend herself from a broad daylight street robbery, in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Witness Bradley Thomas, who called 911, said “To hear that a woman defended herself and shot an assailant, I mean, good for her. I’m glad she’s okay”.  Police identified Jonathan Tyrone Peace as the suspect. He is expected to survive the single gunshot to the chest delivered by his intended victim, and to face charges.

Tracy – This story is all about luck and not about textbook examples. A Louisiana Reserve Constable was working on a house he was building when he was approached by an armed robber on a bicycle. The robber forced the Constable to accompany him to an ATM and get him cash. However, the robber was apparently unsatisfied with the amount and again took the Constable to his home, where he allowed the Constable to enter his home to retrieve a second ATM card. Becoming impatient, the robber followed the Constable into the home, where he was greeted with gunfire. The robber dropped his gun after receiving a single shot, and the Constable stopped firing. Police Chief Carl Dunn said that the victim “..showed quick thinking and restraint..”

Rob  – Bountiful, Utah

When two men tried to rob a Bountiful pawn shop, one of them would not leave the store alive.

The pair were wanted in connection with a string of robberies in Oklahoma and Texas.

They entered the shop, one armed with a gun and the other was armed with a hammer.  When the gunman turned to close the door, the clerk ran to a store room, drew his concealed weapon and backed himself into a corner.

When the man followed him into the room, the clerk fired.

The two fought on the ground prior to the criminal succumbing to his wounds.  The clerk also was injured, a cut to the head and a black eye.

The clerk believed the pair had been in the store the previous day and had tried to conceal their identities and left when others had noticed them.

The second robber ran from the store after his accomplice was shot.  The took off in a white SUV and was last seen wearing a blue face mask, gray hooded shirt and jeans.

John – Highland Falls, North Carolina

Home invasions happen in all areas.  At this Highland Falls area home, the break-in started with the garage door and dragging food out of a deep freeze.

It then progressed into the residential part of the house.

When the homeowner or a caretaker came face to face with the intruder, it ended in gunfire.  The man had called state officials and had been told he was within legal rights if his house was being broken into.

The intruder lay dead in the home.  The intruder was a mother black bear who had several cubs, reports said up to 4.  Two of them have been captured and the search continues for more. They have been taken to a rehabilitator until they are fully weened and then transferred to a holding facility where they will only associate with other bears for the next 9 months.

Jacob Brudett’s wife was on her way home when she encountered a dark vehicle on the side of the road.  She attempted to go around it but they pulled out and blocked her way. Her husband’s mother then got out of the car and threatened “I’m going to kill you.”
In January, the couple has been granted guardianship of his 10-year-old sister.  This has caused problems.
About the same time as the confrontation between the wife and her mother-in-law, deputies were called out to the couple’s home when Burdett’s older sister claimed he had pushed her and took her phone.  Burdett countered her claims when he told deputies that she tried to fight him and threatened “to burn down the house and kill them all.”
A few day’s later, Jacob was recovering at home from outpatient surgery when his mother and her boyfriend arrived and started fighting with him.  Both of them were see on top of Jacob, beating him. The boyfriend grabbed a rifle and Burdett grabbed another gun and fired.
Court records who the boyfriend, who died from the gunshot wounds, had a long history of felony assault, sex crimes, battery and drugs and had spent several years in prison and drug rehab.
Burdett’s mug shot showed signs of the physical injuries he sustained in the fight.  He was booked for homicide and attempted homicide but the investigation was continuing.

Paul: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

Rob- You are the Target in the Culture War

Politicians will take a mile of freedom once we gave them an inch of authority. These infringements go beyond business regulations. They go far beyond “concerns for public safety”. This is cultural harassment for political gain, and the reasons are straightforward. Politicians represent the small minority of the population that funded them into office. Politicians want to drive out any culture that threatens the voting blocks that keep them in office. For these politicians, it is only the business of money and votes, but for you, it feels personal. I listed several examples in the article, “You are the Target in the Culture War”.

My articles are up at Clash Daily, at Ammoland and at my blog, slow facts dot wordpress dot com.  John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money.

A group of Catholic nuns think that forcing Ruger and other publicly traded gun companies to issue reports on what they are doing about “gun violence” and progress on so-called smart guns is a good idea. Unfortunately, they were able to convince enough institutional investors to back their move that this was shoved down Ruger’s throat. Ruger issued a statement saying they were obligated to issue a report but that they was it. They are not changing the products they make nor will stop supporting the Second Amendment and gun rights. I anticipate American Outdoor Brands or S&W will be next for this group.

I saw a lot of old friends who I’ve met over the years and I made some new ones. Liston Matthews – he has been on the show before – and I roomed together. A Florida man used his concealed firearm to protect himself from a late-night car-jacker. Witnesses say that the CCW holder used his firearm after the attacker punched him in the face. The attack took place in a parking lot in Orlando. The victim was about to enter the premises when he was approached and attacked by the car-jacker. When police arrived, they found the attacker unresponsive at the scene. They have not disclosed whether the victim will face charges for defending himself.

Memphis police are searching for a man who attempted an armed robbery in broad daylight outside their home, after a woman used her firearm to stop the incident. The victims reported that a man asked them if he could use their phone, and then asked for a ride, before pulling a gun on them. The woman observed the incident and came from her home with her handgun, firing a warning shot. The video shows all too well how confusing and spontaneous these situations can be. Police are using the family’s home surveillance video to identify the attacker.

When two men tried to rob his store Friday morning, a pawn shop clerk in Bountiful, Utah,  hid for a moment before shooting and killing one of the suspects who pointed a gun at him, authorities said. Bountiful Police reviewed the store’s video footage and then said that the clerk was “obviously defending himself”. When the two armed robbers entered the store, the clerk retreated to a small room, drawing his concealed firearm. When one of the attackers followed him there, the clerk used the firearm to defend himself. The attacker was still able to grapple with the clerk, before succumbing to the defensive gunshots.

When a home invasion took place at 4.30 in the morning, a 70-year grandmother Maxine Thompson used her late mother’s handgun to chase the intruder out of her home. Despite security lights and alarms, and shouted warnings, the invader broke a window and entered the home. It was then that the grandmother Thompson, who lives alone, opened fire. She said, “At first I thought I was dreaming, but the banging continues.. I yelled ‘get off my door’..’when I shot at him, he turned and ran, so I ran down the stairs after him and shot some more..I hope I sent him and the rest of them a lesson  ‘get the hell out of peoples’ houses’ “. San Antonio, Texas

A 33-year-old woman called 911 at 4:30 AM telling them that she had just shot a man in a room at a San Antonio Motel 6.

By the time officers arrived, he was gone.

She told them that her ex-boyfriend had recently gotten out of prison and had shown up earlier in the evening and caused a disturbance.

She had thought he had left, but when she opened the door to go do laundry, he suddenly forced his way in.

He pulled a knife and attempted to sexually assault her.  She responded by shooting him.

A few minutes later, another 911 call was received directing them to a nearby 7-Eleven.

They found the man suffering from two gunshot wounds in the back seat of a SUV.

They detailed and questioned the woman who had driven him to the store and meanwhile at the motel the woman who shot him was questioned.

It was too early to tell if her self-defense claim will hold up.

Limestone County, Texas

Laura Williams was awakened by the ringing of the doorbell.  Williams went to the door and answered it. The man at the door had a shovel and asked for a lady’s name to which she replied that he had the wrong address, there was no one there by that name.

He left but Williams felt uncomfortable.

She looked out her window and could see him standing at the opening to the woods with the shovel and looking back at her home.

She woke her daughter and rounded up the dogs and went to her bedroom.

As soon as she got the door shut, he was back, kicking in the front door and hitting it with the shovel.

Williams pulled her revolver out of the nightstand and confronted the man in the living room.  At the same time, her daughter was calling 911.

She took aim and told him, “if you take one more step I’ll kill you.”

He mumbled something then turned to leave.  As he walked through the door, he stopped and told her, “Well, all y’all need to know is y’all need to leave me the F alone.”

Deputies arrived 14 minutes later and found the man in a nearby trailer park.

Maple Valley, Washington

It was 8:30 PM when 2 cars pulled into the Maple Valley, Washington driveway.  The homeowner noticed them while checking on the animals he owns.

He walked up to them and asked if he could help them.  They said, “Well, I think we have the wrong house.” The homeowner replied, “OK. I could help you.  But I’m sorry, nothing personal, I’m gonna have to take some pictures of you guys.”

He pulled out his cellphone and did just that.  One of the guys took his hat off for the picture.  He also saw one holding a shotgun and cocking it getting ready to shoot.

He tells them, “Don’t do it.  Don’t be stupid.” And starts backing up.  He is also practicing POGO.

As the shotgun wielder opened fire, he ran with his face toward the gunman because he wanted to keep himself between them and his house where his kids were. He exchanged fire with them at the same time.

He credited the trees with saving his life and keeping him uninjured.

His wife called 911 as the cars sped off.

He provided the pictures he took to detectives.

PSP NEWS APRIL 23rd

Meanwhile Listeners, the post-Parkland assault on your Second Amendment rights continues…

One of the most interesting, and pernicious, tactics that is being revealed on the new assault is that pressure is being put on legitimate gun owners, and gun businesses, through banks and other companies. Most recently, Yeti Coolers dropped their sponsorship of the NRA. Bank of America and Citibank have decided to un-do their business relationships with firearms manufacturers. And when Wells Fargo bank refused to follow suit, the American Federation of Teachers removed their (considerable) resources.

hese techniques represent a new strategy on behalf of the anti-gunners. They simply circumvent the legal process and pressurize their friendly commercial institutions.They have even persuaded Dicks Sporting Goods to destroy their AR-style inventory.

And at local levels, they are attempting to shut down the First Amendment rights of gun owners, by pressuring venues to cancel 2A speakers, a technique the Left has uses successfully to prevent Right-leaning guests from speaking on University campuses

Listeners, we are in open war with the Left, who would disarm us. The question should be *Why* are they pressing to disarm us and *What* will come when they succeed. And make no mistake. They are winning. Bigly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Listeners, we all heard of the move by Deerfield Illinois to ban AR-style rifles, and empower their  Police Department to confiscate unsurrendered firearms, backing this up with a $1,000 per day fine.
Well, now an IL county is fighting back.
Effingham County in Illinois has officially declared itself a “Sanctuary County” for gun owners. The county board passed the Sanctuary County provision two weeks ago, by a margin of 8:1.
While admitting the action was largely symbolic, Effingham County State Attorney said that the action will not control decision-making by law enforcement. Nonetheless, that decision directs County employees to “not enforce any new State Law that would unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment.
Listeners, if Federal and State Law can be flouted by left-wing sympathizer states, cant we please be sympathetic to those who would have our backs?
CDC study confirms over 2 Million annual defensive gun uses… but then goes unpublished.
Listeners will recall the complaints (fake news) that the CDC was not allowed to study violence with guns. There was also renewed complaints when recently, the government declared that such work was now to be allowed.
What is interesting to ask, is what happened to the work that the CDC was doing on this topic all in the meantime. Well, a recently discovered study shows us.
Since the early 90s Florida State faculty member was quoting around two-million DGUs per year. This now appears to be confirmed by the previously missing CDC study. In a CDC study conducted over 1996 thru 1998, approximately 2.5 million DGUs per year are discussed. Florida State criminologist Gary Kleck said that the CDC report confirmed that people use handguns to defend themselves about three-and-a-half times as often as criminals use them.
Listeners, let’s think about reasons why CDC never released the report. Why not email us with them?
Hollywood antigun stances backfire.
WE are now all-too familiar with Hollywood celebrities sounding off about “Gun Violence” and “Need for Gun Control” while simultaneously shooting their way into and out of trouble with handguns that seemlngly never miss, nor need reloading,
Well it seems that this effort may be having the opposite effect – instead of thinking that there should be fewer guns, the Hollywood Effect is increasing support for the Second Amendment.
In a recent poll of 898,  twice as many respondents indicated that they would be inclined to oppose the anti-gun Hollywood views as to support it. This view held across all aspects of American Society. 65 % supported “maintaining their constitutional right to bear arms”, whole only 25% who  opposed the 2nd Amendment. Th
These finding echoed another poll, where 60% said that the 2nd Amendment was “very” personally meaningful.
Listeners, let’s hope that the grass roots are not following the money spent by Bloomberg and associates, but it will still take everyone of us to vote in November.
3- Interview 1 – Steve Denney
Paul- I have been through a handgun retention class and one of the major things that anti gun people say is “if you have a gun the criminal will just take it away and use it on you” my take is that if you have training that that just isn’t true, Your thoughts?
Belle- I have always considered our Retention class one of the most important classes we teach, second to the Trauma class, I find it difficult to explain to shooters how important classes like this are, because they want to be in those live fire classes. How do you stress the importance to your students who might be on the fence about taking a Retention class?
4- Interview 2 – Karen McDonald & Shelley Hill
INTRO: APRIL IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH SO THE FOCUS WILL BE BASED ON HELPING CHILDREN!
Shelley is one of the people behind the Complete Combatant. She and her husband Brian reach firearms, unarmed defense and many other self defense techniques.  She is also the executive director for Racheal’s Rest.
Karen McDonald is the founder, president and head counselor of Racheal’s Rest
A few great questions to ask Karen  is:
*What is the purpose and goal of RR
*Why did you name it Racheal’s Rest
Belle -*What is your CHILDHOOD background and how does this help you while working w children?
Belle *How is RR different than other CHILDRENS programs that offer overnight retreats?
*Tell us a bit about your CHILDRENS counseling and PLAY THERAPY
Paul – is this family based or children only?
.Belle – What has this done for you on your healing journey?
Paul – It’s a little unusual for an organization like Racheal’s Rest to be closely involved with the firearms community Could you talk a little bit about the relationship you have with the complete combatant?
5- DGUs  (at beginning) These discussions are NOT legal advice. Some of us are trainers, but this is not formal training and YOU NEED formal training. The Defensive Gun Use segment is intended as information, NOT as training. As always the opinions of the hosts are only their own opinions and not those of any sponsors or other affiliations.
Rob- I think this news report is wrong. The attacker had a shotgun as he entered. The defender used her handgun. VV
At 3:30 in the morning, Charles “Tiny” Alley started banging on the door of the home of Tim Anthony and his girlfriend.  Alley had bought a car from Anthony a few years ago and had made angry threats about it. He had decided it was time to make good on his threats.
As Anthony, with pistol in hand, cracked the door, Alley and another unidentified man forced their way into the home and started fighting with the homeowner.  The force of the entry left a hole in the wall. .
While the two men were fighting and the intruder threatening harm to other residents, the girlfriend retrieved a shotgun and shot the intruder in the head leaving him dead at the scene.  The accomplice quickly vacated the premises.
The homeowner told the press that “if it wasn’t for her doing what she did, I wouldn’t be standing here right now.”  With a nickname like “Tiny”, it can be assumed that there was a disparity of size between the two men.
20-year-old Tevin Horton walked into the N & A Food Mart armed with a revolver and demanded money from the clerk. The time was 10:40 PM.
The clerk and the criminal briefly struggled and the clerk was able to get away and ran to another area of the store.  The thug was close behind. But that was all the time that he needed to pull his own gun and fired several shots at Horton.
Horton decided to make his exit at this point.
Police brought in the tracking dogs to search for the wanted man in the area but soon heard of a gunshot victim about 2 miles away.
When they arrived, the supposed drive-by shooting victim had wounds on his lower back and buttocks.  Surveillance video and other evidence said otherwise. It put him at the scene of the attempted robbery.
He is now facing charges of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
Once again, we are reminded that home invasions happen at all times of the day.
About 1:45 PM, Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call about an intruder in a home.
When they went to investigate, they found a woman in the home who was armed and had confronted the intruder with her firearm in hand.  The 33-year-old male suspect exited the scene immediately.
Keri Reeves was in fear for her life and said, “This could have been a very different situation had I not been properly armed.”
“I’m one of those people that can go from zero to a hundred in 2.5 seconds and I’m not a nice person normally, but as soon as I got on the phone with the sheriff’s department he was out of sight. The severity of it hit me, and I was in hysterics. I was crying, I was scared, I was very shaken.”
The thief was found walking out of the woods nearby with Reeve’s possessions in hand.
The victim confronted the criminal in court at the bond hearing.  “You came within 2.5 seconds of having a full clip (sic) unloaded into your skull,” she said. “Next time you will have the full clip (sic) unloaded.”
Rob- Albuquerque, New Mexico
Judith Burkhalter and her boyfriend, Carlos Vasquez, found out the home they own but do not live in had been broken into.  The next day the arranged to meet a cleaner at the house and to check out the damage.
The burglar was still in the house and armed when they got there.  He saw them coming and tried to get out but couldn’t find a way out where he wouldn’t be seen.
Vasquez pulled his 9mm pistol as the robber lunged at him with a box cutter.  He dodged the blade and returned the welcome with the barrel to the attackers head.  The then gave him a warning that he would shoot.
The burglar kept up the attack and the homeowner fired his pistol.  The shot hit the target in the butt.
He was due in court two days later but was still under medical care and could show up in court the next day.
Rob- Sacrificing Public Safety to Please Special Interests-
Nothing happens by accident in politics. Bad ideas get so much political traction from elected officials. Politician say they want to do the right thing. Unfortunately, what is right for them isn’t necessarily right for us. Look at the issue of murders in school. Experts told us what to do to protect our children, yet progress is painfully slow. We want our children protected while the politician needs to get credit and kickbacks for the solution. That leaves ours children at risk. We see that time after time.
My articles are up at Clash Daily, at Ammoland and at my blog, slow facts dot wordpress dot com.  John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money.
