Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)
Rob- Bill Frady and I talked about Politics and Guns on his Lock and Load Radio program. I went to the MAG 20 classroom, a silencer shoot, NRA convention where I got to see Rachel Malone, John Richardson, Gary Daugherty and also our friends Lloyd Bailey of Armed Lutheran Radio, and Amanda Suffecool and Bob Campbell of Eye on the Target Radio.
At the NRA I saw a Huffington Post reporter be asked to leave a seminar..where the NRA welcomed me. Some journalists are more honest than others. I also took another day of medical training.
Paul – Rob was that your 1st MAG 20?
John- I actually met Melissa Jeltsen, that HuffPo reporter, and have had an email conversation with her regarding my opposition to the term “gun violence”. I spent most of the weekend at the Asheville Gun Show working the Grass Roots North Carolina booth. Gun shows shouldn’t be scheduled on Mother’s Day/graduation weekend! Attendance was way down. I did pick up some .44 Special ammo and a custom made Nessmuk knife.
Tracy – I just picked up (literally this afternoon) a new Smith & Wesson M&P Shield .380 EZ, for my students who don’t have much hand and upper body strength. Look for my review on the gun in an upcoming episode. Next week, I have a lesson with Karl Rehn to work on my quad speed qualification for the upcoming MAG-180 next month in Wisconsin.
Promo about upcoming training classes here.

“Hillary and Senator Murphy may claim that they care about the poor, but poor people in the highest-crime areas are the most likely to be priced out of owning guns for protection.”
Hang on everybody, we’ll be back with our guest (Name).
3- Interview 1 with Charlie Cook of Riding Shotgun with Charlie.
4- Interview 2
The vast majority of anti-rights gun prohibitionists are liberals and Democrats. What do you want us to call them?
5- DGUs (at beginning) These discussions are NOT legal advice. Some of us are trainers, but this is not formal training and YOU NEED formal training. The Defensive Gun Use segment is intended as information, NOT as training. As always the opinions of the hosts are only their own opinions and not those of any sponsors or other affiliations.

A woman survived a kidnapping attempt by turning her captor’s gun on him. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department received a call to respond to a fatal shooting at a gas station in Starr, South Carolina. Rodney Nixon had broken into the home of his ex-girlfriend, assaulted a man who was there, and then kidnapped his ex. However, Nixon’s car broke down and he forced a neighbor to take him and the kidnap victim in the neighbor’s car, at gunpoint. The neighbor’s car ran low on gas and they pulled into a gas station, where Nixon proceeded to refill the car. His ex-girlfriend saw her chance and got the gun away from Nixon, and then shot him in the chest with it. The case is still under investigation and no charges have yet been filed. Coroner Greg Shore said “This would have been a very bad outcome for everybody if she had not shot him.”
Gary- Would-be robber Arkeem Bennett chose the wrong victim when he produced a handgun to stop and threaten a Florida CCW holder. While returning home from the movies with a family member, a legal CCW holder in Gainesville Florida was confronted by Bennett, who attempted to rob him at gunpoint while his accomplice waited in a car. Unfortunately for Bennet, his intended victim drew and fired, striking Bennett several times. The CCW holder called 911 and Police attended the scene. The police later said that Bennett was later found dead, and that there was no prior connection between Bennett and his intended victim. They are keeping the identity of the CCW holder secret, and it is “likely” that he will not be charged.
John- A 23-year old woman used her legal firearm to defend herself from a broad daylight street robbery, in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Witness Bradley Thomas, who called 911, said “To hear that a woman defended herself and shot an assailant, I mean, good for her. I’m glad she’s okay”. Police identified Jonathan Tyrone Peace as the suspect. He is expected to survive the single gunshot to the chest delivered by his intended victim, and to face charges.
Tracy – This story is all about luck and not about textbook examples. A Louisiana Reserve Constable was working on a house he was building when he was approached by an armed robber on a bicycle. The robber forced the Constable to accompany him to an ATM and get him cash. However, the robber was apparently unsatisfied with the amount and again took the Constable to his home, where he allowed the Constable to enter his home to retrieve a second ATM card. Becoming impatient, the robber followed the Constable into the home, where he was greeted with gunfire. The robber dropped his gun after receiving a single shot, and the Constable stopped firing. Police Chief Carl Dunn said that the victim “..showed quick thinking and restraint..”
Rob – Bountiful, Utah
When two men tried to rob a Bountiful pawn shop, one of them would not leave the store alive.
The pair were wanted in connection with a string of robberies in Oklahoma and Texas.
They entered the shop, one armed with a gun and the other was armed with a hammer. When the gunman turned to close the door, the clerk ran to a store room, drew his concealed weapon and backed himself into a corner.
When the man followed him into the room, the clerk fired.
The two fought on the ground prior to the criminal succumbing to his wounds. The clerk also was injured, a cut to the head and a black eye.
The clerk believed the pair had been in the store the previous day and had tried to conceal their identities and left when others had noticed them.
The second robber ran from the store after his accomplice was shot. The took off in a white SUV and was last seen wearing a blue face mask, gray hooded shirt and jeans.
Paul- If I were going to rob ANY place gun stores and pawn shops would be the lowest place on my list of places to rob
John – Highland Falls, North Carolina
Home invasions happen in all areas. At this Highland Falls area home, the break-in started with the garage door and dragging food out of a deep freeze.
It then progressed into the residential part of the house.
When the homeowner or a caretaker came face to face with the intruder, it ended in gunfire. The man had called state officials and had been told he was within legal rights if his house was being broken into.
The intruder lay dead in the home. The intruder was a mother black bear who had several cubs, reports said up to 4. Two of them have been captured and the search continues for more. They have been taken to a rehabilitator until they are fully weened and then transferred to a holding facility where they will only associate with other bears for the next 9 months.
Rob- N VA, and NJ.
Gary – Fresno, California
Jacob Brudett’s wife was on her way home when she encountered a dark vehicle on the side of the road. She attempted to go around it but they pulled out and blocked her way. Her husband’s mother then got out of the car and threatened “I’m going to kill you.”
In January, the couple has been granted guardianship of his 10-year-old sister. This has caused problems.
About the same time as the confrontation between the wife and her mother-in-law, deputies were called out to the couple’s home when Burdett’s older sister claimed he had pushed her and took her phone. Burdett countered her claims when he told deputies that she tried to fight him and threatened “to burn down the house and kill them all.”
A few day’s later, Jacob was recovering at home from outpatient surgery when his mother and her boyfriend arrived and started fighting with him. Both of them were see on top of Jacob, beating him. The boyfriend grabbed a rifle and Burdett grabbed another gun and fired.
Court records who the boyfriend, who died from the gunshot wounds, had a long history of felony assault, sex crimes, battery and drugs and had spent several years in prison and drug rehab.
Burdett’s mug shot showed signs of the physical injuries he sustained in the fight. He was booked for homicide and attempted homicide but the investigation was continuing.
Paul – We train with guns all the time, when was the last time you had high performance driving training? SCCA has events all over the country where high performance driving is done in parking lots.
We post each of our news and defensive gun use articles at Polite Society Podcast.com Please take a minute and share them with a friend.

Paul: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?
Politicians will take a mile of freedom once we gave them an inch of authority. These infringements go beyond business regulations. They go far beyond “concerns for public safety”. This is cultural harassment for political gain, and the reasons are straightforward. Politicians represent the small minority of the population that funded them into office. Politicians want to drive out any culture that threatens the voting blocks that keep them in office. For these politicians, it is only the business of money and votes, but for you, it feels personal. I listed several examples in the article, “You are the Target in the Culture War”.
A group of Catholic nuns think that forcing Ruger and other publicly traded gun companies to issue reports on what they are doing about “gun violence” and progress on so-called smart guns is a good idea. Unfortunately, they were able to convince enough institutional investors to back their move that this was shoved down Ruger’s throat. Ruger issued a statement saying they were obligated to issue a report but that they was it. They are not changing the products they make nor will stop supporting the Second Amendment and gun rights. I anticipate American Outdoor Brands or S&W will be next for this group.
