Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- I got books and DVDs from the Armed Citizen Legal Defense Network.  And a new shoulder holster.  Thanks, John.

John – I finished grading all my exams, turned it my grades, and now my career as an adjunct professor has come to a close. That will give me time to actually go shooting and I won’t have to worry about missing a class when I attend the SHOT Show. Speaking of which, I got my program for it in the mail today and now just need my badge to arrive. Other than that, I’m trying to wrap business up as we are heading to St. Louis on Saturday for a whirlwind trip.

Gary – What training do you have coming up?

A couple of private classes left this year. January is getting pretty booked up.

We’re Winning!

For the first time in twenty years, a majority of Americans oppose an “assault weapon” ban. In a New York Times poll that probably rocked the editors to their Guccis, 50% of Americans are now against a ban, while 44% remain in favor of the Clintonesque elimination of the modern sporting rifle. Since 1995, the public reversed its opinion by 16 points, an incredible amount considering this divisive, highly politicized issue.

The poll numbers are backed by the increasing numbers of first time AR-15 buyers, ever-climbing NICS checks, long lines at the ranges, humming firearm factories, and the sadly reduced stocks of firearms and ammo in gun stores. This change has occurred in spite of the media’s steady anti-gun drumbeat, the constant demonization by the politicians, junk science studies, and Bloomberg’s millions.  The reversal has come with the steady leadership of the NRA, the brilliant legal maneuvering of the Second Amendment Foundation, and the steady rain of facts and analysis from John Lott. Mostly, the change came from the American people themselves, who must have looked at the realities of America’s rifle, and it’s role in defending the Constitution and the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Rob Comment- Candidate Hillary Clinton said that voters WANT more gun control.  How is it possible that many public opinion polls say one thing and Candidate Clinton says another.

Gary- She lies.. and

John – In response to this, Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island introduced HR 4269 yesterday. While the text isn’t available, the working title says everything –  A bill To regulate assault weapons, to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited, and for other purposes. It has 123 co-sponsors – all Democrats.

Gary

He’s Loosing!
In the wake of the San Bernardino massacre, Obama continues his attempts to keep guns from the hands of American citizens. As if international terrorism can be defeated by simply controlling firearms of law-abiding Americans. His administration is working on executive actions to tighten background checks, create additional classes of prohibited persons, and increase the requirements for Federal firearms licensees.

To further these goals, Obama invited our old friend Michael Bloomberg to the White House for a closed-door strategy session. “The two discussed ways to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have access to them and what more could be done at the state and local level to help address gun violence in America,” according to the White House. Obama is obviously looking to coordinate the media mogul’s support for any sweeping executive restructuring of the firearm laws. The legality of the executive actions is questionable and would certainly be challenged in court by the Republicans and the gun- rights organizations. Despite these hurdles, Valerie Jarrett said that the executive orders would be revealed in “short order,”

We’ll be waiting, Mr Obama.

John – More importantly, the attorneys for the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation will be waiting!

Rob- Bloomberg wanted to know where to send a check.

Sen Paul’s Bill To Gut DC Gun Laws

We’ve told you before about DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier urging her city’s citizens to fight back against terrorists — while working to eliminate the firearms that would allow the citizens to fight effectively.  Now, Senator Rand Paul is fast-tracking the “Defend Our Capital Act 2015” which would gut the city’s draconian gun-control laws.

Paul’s proposal would force DC to issue concealed carry permits to both District residents and nonresidents. It would also require the District to honor concealed carry licenses from other states and roll-back D.C. laws that currently restrict gun and ammunition ownership. The proposal can’t come at a better time, as a three-judge panel at the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. disqualified a federal judge in a ruling where he said the District’s highly restrictive concealed carry law is unconstitutional. DC’s ban on CCWs is back in force.

Unfortunately, Paul needs the support of at least six Democrats to move the legislation through the Senate over the threatened filibuster. Joe Donnelly was the only Democrat to vote in favor of Paul’s amendment last week; RINO Republican Mark Kirk (IL) voted against it.

Call your Senator and urge them to support this common-sense gun law!

Governor Trying To Implement No Fly – No Buy in Connecticut

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy is trying to make his state the first to ban the sale of guns to people on federal government watch lists. Claiming this as a common-sense step, Malloy would implement the ban by executive order, which he says he will soon sign.

The measure, which Malloy said needs federal approval, would require state police to determine if a potential gun buyer was on the federal no-fly list or on a watchlist for people suspected of ties to terrorism. It would also revoke existing gun permits issued to people on such a list.

Although Malloy claims this is the right thing to do, State gun-rights groups were quick to criticize the move. “I think it is downright dangerous and above and beyond what is constitutionally acceptable,” said Scott Wilson, president of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League. White House spokeshole Josh Earnest welcomed Connecticut’s move but said that the Obama administration was determined to press ahead with federal action on guns. “There are necessarily some shortcoming to that approach,” Earnest told reporters at press briefing on Thursday.

Shortcomings, yes; at least two. The ban would not have stopped the terror couple’s California attack as the shooters were not on any government terrorism watch list. Loving a bad idea, Illinois and California are also proposing similar laws. Many legal scholars believe these attempts would be in direct violation of Amendments Two, Five and Fourteen of the  United States Constitution. Governor Malloy would also be in violation of Article 1, Section 8 and Article 1, Section 15 of the Connecticut Constitution. The Second Amendment Foundation, among others, is promising an immediate lawsuit. It’s time to get out the checkbook to defend your rights — again.

Comment- rob- I think the no-fly no buy proposal is a distraction.  Look at all the gun control laws that absolutely failed to stop mass murderers.  The two muslims who attacked an art show in Garland Texas,  the murderer who shot up armed forces recruitment centers in Chattanooga Tennessee, the murderer at the Oregon community college, at colorado Springs, and now the murders at the Christmas Party in San Bernardino.  Gun control failed each and every time.  The democrats need a distraction from their failure.

John – I would not be surprised to see Gov. Terry McAuliffe try the same thing in Virginia. It appears that there is a definite strategy to try and end run Congress on this by going to gun-control friendly states. Or, at least, states with Democrats in charge.

Paul – I wonder if this is a dance with Obama

Gun TV

This is going to make some anti’s heads explode: Gun TV, a channel that lets people order firearms from the comfort of their Barcaloungers, is coming to a flatscreen near you. The GTV Live Shopping Network will open for business this coming January. Viewers will be able to buy guns, ammunition, firearms accessories and related gear dressed in their fuzzy slippers. All firearms laws will be followed. Purchases will be sent to local retail stores, where customers will have to pass the federally-mandated background check before taking their firearms home. Initially, there will be six hours of GTV a week, expanding to 24/7 sometime in the first year.

Predictably, the antis immediately speed-knotted their panties. Critics (there’s always some) suggest that Gun TV could trivialize the decision to purchase a weapon, making it the equivalent of ordering a Snuggie or a Ronco Pocket Fisherman. They believe it’s not a decision you should be making at three in the morning because you are watching TV.

We could say the same thing about Snuggies.

Resisting Unjust Laws

Fifty-two years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote from his Birmingham jail cell: “One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Today, many are heeding the spirit of Dr. King’s words and engaging in civil disobedience of what they feel are unjust, unConstitutional laws.

New York’s draconian gun ban has been routinely ignored by the state’s residents, with compliance being estimated at less than ten percent. Connecticut’s state government passed a law demanding the registration of certain firearms, and the people of Connecticut mainly refused to comply. The city of Sunnyvale demanded that residents hand over all firearms capable of accepting magazines holding more than ten rounds — everything except revolvers and some single-shot rifles — and their citizens turned in a grand total of zero firearms. LA city’s ban on standard capacity magazines has resulted in exactly zero mags being turned into police during the grace period. Throughout the United States, citizens are refusing the mandates of their so-called leaders.

Political scientists call it “Irish Democracy” when a populace resists unpopular laws by simply refusing to comply with them. It is a low-grade form of civil disobedience, which can be quite powerful when practiced by a significant portion of the people. When the resistance is widespread, as during Prohibition years, the situation effectively becomes ungovernable.

Gun owners are by large an extremely law-abiding group. But push them too far, and they can become rather stubborn, believing in the intent of the Founding Fathers, their natural rights, cherished freedoms, and the absolute necessity of keeping and bearing arms in this very dangerous world.

John – FAA licensing of model planes.

DOJ slow in processing california carry applications

There has been another run on guns as people flocked to gun stores.  This is particularly true in California.  This makes some sense since California has had more than its share of mass public murders.  Its borders are wide open, and the bankrupt state is releasing convicted criminals from jail at an alarming rate.  Some gun stores reported doing four times their regular business.  The requests for background checks and concealed carry applications have also gone up.  Now there is a new bottleneck in Sacramento at the California Department of Justice.  They were always slow to run their background checks.  Now they say they will be even slower.  So tell me.  just how long can they wait as these honorable citizens wait to get the state’s recognition?  Will they wait weeks, months.. or years.

Even before this latest muslim attack in San Bernardino, the wait to get an interview in Placer county was 9 months.  Can you say infringed?

Comment- can you say lawsuit, as in a right delayed is a right denied.

Church carry in California

Geof Peabody lives on the western slope of the Sierra mountains in El Dorado County, California.  Peabody trains priests, ministers and church staff for free at his gun range in Placerville.  He’s trained more than 500 people, and the list is growing rapidly.  Classes filled again early this year with the murder of nine parishioners at a church in South Carolina.  Graduates from his class are qualified to apply for a concealed carry permit, and they have.  Many of them carry in church.  El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini is an enthusiastic supporter of concealed carry, and of Peabody’s training for church members.  Sheriff D’Agostini was asked if he feels safer with more concealed carry holders in his county.  Agostini said  “Absolutely. These are law-abiding people. It’s the evil criminals that are the threat.”

More Video from NJ2AS

New listeners might not know about New Jersey’s attitude towards citizen self-defense.  The police delay issuing firearms purchase permits.  They refuse to issue concealed carry permits.  Judges tolerate that abuse of the right of self-defense.  Both prosecutors and judges treat honorable firearms owners as criminals.  In many cases gun owners are treated more harshly for minor violations than are violent career criminals.  This falls on deaf ears in New Jersey legislature.  The New Jersey Second Amendment Society recorded police officials giving false information to the public when citizens asked about applying for a firearms purchase permit.  Now we candid video to show police misconduct claims, and the video is being run on TV stations across the state.

Well done, New Jersey Second Amendment Society.  Can’t wait for your next video to come out.

Kentucky scans concealed carry each month

Kentucky leads the nation in background checks.. for a simple reason.  The state runs a background check on every state concealed carry holder every month.  Now given that the state would know if IT put a concealed carriers name INTO the database, the only reason to run a background check is to see if the concealed carry holder was convicted in another state.  While it does happen, this sounds like a government make-work project riding on the back of honest concealed carry holders.

John- Felony crimes are rare.  Citizens with a concealed carry license commit major crimes only 5 percent as often as the general public.  This is a waste of time, and the police are already busy.

Rob- California sheriff was denied.

Alabama AG whispers, and gun ban signs come down

Sometimes things work as planned.  Alabama passed a law allowing concealed carry in public buildings.  Some public officials thought they controlled us rather than the citizen controlling them.  The law is clear, and the Alabama attorney general received complaints about a number of no gun signs.  These misplace signs were at county offices, tax commissioners offices, county convention centers, historic buildings, theaters, hotels, city halls, public libraries, arts centers, and animal shelters.  The attorney general, Luther Strange, said the signs must come down or these government agencies would be charged in state court.  The signs came down.  As a reminder, the signs came down at public polling places too.

John – Our friend Liston Matthews was one who wrote in.

Carry at work in Oklahoma county

Some states have a different attitude towards government employees carrying at work.  County commissioners in Logan County Oklahoma said employees can carry when they are out of the office. That means a road crew or county inspector can carry for their own protection while they are in the field.  Fortunately, the sheriff agrees.  It isn’t clear yet if county employees can carry in the office as well.

Texas- has a gun ban problem- separate but equal.

The University of Texas has a gun ban problem.  The law requires the University to allow licensed carry on campus.  But, and it is a big but, the university can impose rules for “public safety”.  What we call public safety and what they call public safety are widely different.  Their rules allow an university employee to impose a gun free zone on their office.  The staff member then has to make themselves available to students at another location.  That means the concealed carrier has to reveal if they are carrying.

Comment-  On the other hand, a student who might not be old enough to carry yet, could also ask to meet with the employee outside the office.  I’d do that just to piss off the liberal professors.

John – Liberal professors. But we repeat ourselves.

Susan- True.  What the regulation does NOT DO, is require that the frightened staff member make themselves available to other STAFF MEMBERS outside the gun free zone.  The gun free zone means that the janitor has to go to work disarmed.  Texans, call your legislators.

Texas mass transit to call the cops on open carry

Texas law says that you can open carry on public transportation in Texas.  That doesn’t stop a public transit employee from calling the cops to file a false brandishing charge.  A memo to Dallas Area Rapid Transit employes says-

Greet the open carrier like any other passenger.

Notify Bus Dispatch/Train Control of the boarding/arrival.

Follow Bus Dispatch/Train Control instructions before DART Police arrive on scene.  Police will respond.

These rules are designed to inconvenience passengers that choose to peacefully exercise their rights to openly display a firearm in a holstered handgun.  This policy is also designed to train the public to fear open carriers.

Sounds like the open carriers need to plan trips with their own video crew until the Rapid Transit Authority remembers who they work for.

Gun Quotes

To ban guns because criminals use them is to tell the innocent and law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the guilty and the lawless, and that the law will permit them to have only such rights and liberties as the lawless will allow. … For society does not control crime, ever, by forcing the law-abiding to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of criminals. Society controls crime by forcing the criminals to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of the law-abiding. – Jeff Snyder

1 St Louis Homeowner Shoots a Home Invader

A quiet North St Louis county morning was shattered by gunshots as a homeowner defended his life from two home-invaders. The owner heard a loud banging on his front door and saw two men that he did not recognize, which prompted him to grab a gun. He was ready when the pair splintered the back door.

Shots were exchanged, and a 19-yr-old thug fell mortally wounded. His partner left him on the floor and ran. Several days later, St Louis police arrested another 19 yr old and charged him with armed criminal action, burglary and second-degree murder for the death of his accomplice. Turns out the man was already infamous for a videoed grab and run clothing robbery that knocked a 87-yr-old nun to the ground. Police will charge him with four counts of felony stealing for that crime. There is no word on what the nuns will do to him. The uninjured homeowner is not likely to face any charges as he was defending his life.

Rob- cell phone, panic alarm.

2 Two builders tear down a thief in Cincinnati

Two Cincinnati, Ohio building contractors were working on a remodel when one of them walked out to get more tools from their truck.  The builder was stopped by a robber with a gun.  The victim turned over his wallet when the second contractor came to the door.  The thief tried to rob that man of his wallet too, but this victim had his concealed carry permit and was armed.  The victim drew his gun.  The thief fired his gun several times before he was shot and killed by the intended victim.  The two victims were not injured.  They were held by police for a few hours and then released without charge.

Rob- have a plan.  Know when you’ll put it into action.  Wouldn’t it have been better of both contractors were armed?

3 Craigslist Purchase Goes Bad

A good Craigslist deal for high-end stereo equipment turned into a bad ambush. The Tennessee-area deal turned sour when one of the three buyers pulled a gun and demanded the equipment. One victim told police that if he didn’t act first, he would have been shot. He fired all nine rounds from his weapon and hit the armed suspect at least twice. The two confederates beat feet, leaving their wounded buddy in the dust. The two victims also left and called police from a safer place. Police found the convicted felon still bleeding in the street. They later arrested the other two and will charge all three thieves with aggravated robbery. The unharmed victim is unlikely to face charges as it is believed he acted in self-defense.

Police warn about the dangers involved in these types of transactions, especially around the holiday season. They remind people to only meet in public places.

4 Don’t Bring a Toy to a Gunfight
All in all, criminals are not generally known for their intelligence. One Houston area theif just might have earned his place among the dumbest.  He attempted to rob four people – two of which were military security veterans – using a toy gun – in Texas. And yes, he was well-ventilated for those lapses in judgement.

At closing time, two men and two women were leaving the Houston club where they worked. A car pulled up with three men and at least two drawn guns. While the thieves were busy robbing a woman of her purse, one victim reached into his own car and pulled a gun. Pistolman 17-year-old Dante Grant was shot several times and then kicked in the face. One other suspect may have been hit, but he managed to get away in the car. None of the victims were injured. Grant was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. Police are still searching for his accomplices. The pistol was recovered and found to be only a pellet gun. Unfortunately, the other thieves got a real handgun from the purse of one of the women.

Off body carry fails again……

Paul – Susan

5 Then Again – Some Criminals Do Learn
Three robbers faced a sudden reversal in fortune when a CCW carrying customer acted to defend his life and the life of a cashier. They reversed their path and ran from the scene. There was no word if they were actually turning their lives around at that moment.

The masked trio tried to rob the Newport News, Virginia Family Dollar late one night. One robber had a gun – but, fortunately, so did a customer. When the customer pulled his gun in self-defense, the three pirouetted and beat a very hasty retreat. Not before one was shouldered into a door jamb by his buddy. There were no shots fired.

Area police are looking for the three, who are suspected in a string of similar robberies.  One guy should be really easy to identify, from the bruise that face-full of door must have left.

6 Criminal Pushes His Luck, Follows His Victim Into Home, Gets Shot

From the Only in Nowlans Files: An auto burglary suspect was challenged by the car’s owner. Apparently a little cranky from having his work interrupted, the criminal used a large stick to beat the 62 yr-old owner. When the victim stumbled back into his house, the suspect followed. There, the injured man was able to retrieve a gun and put two into the brazen thief. Jordan Lowe is in stable condition and recovering in a local hospital. He’ll be charged upon release.

Here’s hoping the victim learned his lesson about carrying his weapon on his body. That might just have saved him a beating.

John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money

I came across an editorial in the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald that shocked me. It was an unsigned editorial representing the views of the paper’s editorial board. The shocking thing is that it was, wait for it, pro-gun. It was entitled “Guns not to blame for shootings”. It said that banning guns would stop as many shootings as prohibition stopped drinking. They closed the editorial by saying that “The arms we bear are in fact our most important militia weapons.  The difference between these journalists and the New York Times editors is that they live in the community they serve, go to church with their readers, and shop at Walmart with them. Journalism has a future and it isn’t at the big city dailies.

I had put off moving to Endowment for a few years and thought the time to do it was now especially with all the attacks we are facing and are going to face from anti-gun politicians. Aftermath of San Bernardino Terror Attack

We continue to learn more about the attack on the San Bernardino Holiday party. To no-one’s surprise, except perhaps Obama’s, the FBI officially classified the massacre as a terror attack. Disturbing details continue to emerge about the Islamists, their radicalization, the extensive pre-planning, communications with ISIS, suspicious money transfers, possible helpers, the weapons and their sources. Most troubling is the woman suspect. She was able to pass both the Dept of Homeland Security and FBI background checks and was allowed into the country. Neither she nor her husband triggered any administration concern, despite all their obvious red flags.

Obama addressed the Nation Sunday night. The speech was long on platitudes and lofty intentions and critically short of any new direction or plans. The one area that did receive considerable attention was firearms. Obama again urged Congress to be sure “no-one on the No-Fly list is able to buy a gun.” The effectivity of this list is obvious, as neither of the dead terrorists were on the list. Even with the No-Fly No-Buy law, the terror couple would have been able to buy their weapons despite the FBI background checks. Just one more failure of the thousands of gun-control laws.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are on that list; trapped, as the ACLU puts it, by a virtually standardless government watchlisting scheme that ensnares innocent people and encourages racial and religious profiling. It’s so bad that the reliably hard-left LA Times joined the ACLU in demanding that the Terror Watch be fixed before it’s used to unConstitutionally deprive Americans of their rights.

Call your politicians and demand the end to this tyrannical legislation. More importantly: join and contribute to the NRA and NRA-ILA. They are taking the fight to the enemy that has chosen to fight the law-abiding gun owners instead of terrorists.

Stay prepared, stay armed, stay aware, and stay safe. Fight anyone who wants to take your life or your rights. It’s an increasingly dangerous world out there.

John – The Associated Press is reporting this afternoon that President Obama’s advisors are getting ready to present him a proposal that would allow him to expand background checks without Congressional approval. Obama’s most trusted advisor Valerie Jarrett signaled this on Wed. night in comments at a vigil for the Newtown shooting victims.

America Responds to the Terror Attacks

As George Will observed, Americans are voting with their feet on gun-control. Those feet are taking more and more citizens into the Nation’s gun stores. Will said, “This year on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, 185,000 Americans got background checks for firearms. That’s a one day record in this country. So the American people have made clear what they think about the 2nd Amendment and the usefulness of owning guns.”

Firearm background checks have reached record levels. CCP applications are surging across the nation, especially near the San Bernardino attack. And the more the administration vilifies the NRA, the higher their approval numbers, memberships and donations go. We’re going to give our good friend John a shout-out: for upgrading from Lifetime to the NRA Endowment level.

A hundred million firearms have been sold during Obama’s administration. Without a doubt, he is the champion gun salesman of all time. Makes you wonder if he secretly heavily invested in gun company stocks – or if this is just one more “unexpected consequence“ of Obama’s failing policies.

CF – At Ye Ol’ Gun Shoppe, we’re seeing a rush of first-time firearm buyers. We’ve experienced some increase in ARs and HD shotguns, but most of the new buyers are looking for pistols. Many buyers mention Paris and San Bernardino as well as Obama’s gun-control push. A common refrain is “I just need to have it. But, I’m not going to be shooting it that much.” The shooting community is going to have to guide these new shooters and welcome them into the armed and polite society.

John – Prof Brian Patrick did his dissertation about how the NRA grew more when it was attacked than when it wasn’t.

Rob- It is time of us to stand up as ambassadors for the gun lobby.

Rachel-yes, and offer our alternative to fear

John – The Gun Blog Blacklist is starting a program to try and pair them up with newbies.

Political response to terrorist attacks

Now serving number 358

Gun stores in San Bernardino, California are standing room only.. with a long line waiting outside for room to get in.  The rate of concealed carry applications increased five fold, and there is now a 1000 person backlog waiting for their concealed carry applications to be processed.

Rachel-I’m glad so many people are making a logical response to the danger they saw come so close. I hope that others farther away will also take responsibility for their own safety and not wait until it’s too late, or they have their own close call.

Rob-  They have to grind through that backlog.

Bill Why there hasn’t been or why there isn’t an explosion in training?

Rachel-there is. Take A Girl & A Gun for example.

Rob- They know how to buy, but are not familiar with instruction.

Rob- when will we see the massive online training courses for firearms?

Wear a star

Sheriffs across the country are going public with their support of concealed carry and citizen self-defense.

-Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County, Arizona augments his police force with a civilian posse.  “I’m asking armed citizens to make sure that if some violent activity occurs that they take action to defend themselves, and also the people around them until law enforcement shows up.”

Rob-

-The Sheriff in a small Oklahoma county said this “I encourage all who are legally eligible and trained to carry concealed weapons to do so. I do not want any of us to be helpless victims if we should fall under attack.”

-The Sheriff in Hughes Springs Texas said “I am asking you to help me by arming yourself.  Get a carry permit and learn to use your firearm safely.. We can’t be everywhere all the time.”

Rachel

-The Sheriff in Lebanon, Missouri cut the price of a concealed carry license from 100 down to 65 dollars. He said, “if (people) want to have a concealed firearm and are law-abiding citizens that they have a right to carry a concealed weapon.  It’s getting dangerous for just the common citizen because everybody that was killed in France and all those who were killed in California weren’t cops. They were just normal people, everyday walking-the-street people, and they should have a right to defend themselves.  People having CCWs, (well) you don’t know whether they’re armed or not — and you’re a little more reluctant to go in and shoot a place up or rob people.”

-Two Ohio Sheriffs asked citizens to get their carry permits.  Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said, “people should get their conceal and carry permit and carry a gun where permitted. You don’t want to be that person hiding under the desk or in a closet waiting for someone to come rescue you.”

-Montgomery County, Ohio Sheriff Phil Plummer said much the same thing.  “I encourage all law abiding citizens to get Conceal Carry Permits,” he said. “I think it’s so important that we’re turning around the permits in 24 hours. We have to arm ourselves and protect ourselves because they’re killing our families.”

-Brevard County, Florida Sheriff Wayne Ivey said “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. If you are a person who is legally licensed to carry a firearm, now is a time more than ever to realize that you and you alone very well might be the first line of defense for you [and] your family.”

-Sheriff Helmig from Boone County, Kentucky said “I remind the people who have applied, been trained, and issued a license to carry a Concealed Deadly Weapon (CCDW) that they also have a responsibility to carry their firearm, which they are proficient with, for the safety of themselves and others.”

John – Notice that these are sheriffs – elected LEOs – and not big city police chiefs who are beholden to anti-gun politicians for their job.

Rob

Mayors too

Two mayors in New Jersey asked to arm ordinary citizens.  Egg Harbor Township Mayor James McCullough said “Maybe if someone had a gun during the San Bernardino shooting spree, some of the 14 innocent people would still be alive”.   Estell Manor Councilman-elect Joe Venezia said “(People) should have the right to (protect themselves). It would only be an effective tool to help law enforcement.”

Rob- We’ve seen gun ranges offer discount firearms training to clergy.  We’ve seen Arizona gun stores offer CCW classes with a new purchase.

Rob- Learner’s permit.

1 Don’t Bring a Log to a Gun Fight

A 46-year-old man was challenged by several witnesses after he swiped beer and other items from a Tucson, Arizona convenience store. The man grabbed a large log and charged one of the witnesses. Faced with the deadly – however unwieldy – threat, the witness drew his concealed weapon and shot several times. The logger (see what we did there? ;^)’  ) was transported to a local hospital where he died.

The witness is cooperating with police and no charges have been filed to date.

Rob- Intoxication?

2 Robber Won’t Ever Drink Merlot Again

Two men entered the Baltimore-area Towson Wine and Spirits shop. They weren’t looking for the perfect Pinot Noir, just some easy cash. One robber pulled a gun and pointed it at the head of the clerk, who uncorked his own gun. The 68-year-old clerk was able to shoot the criminal several times in defense of his life. Both criminals ran from the store, one escaped and the other fell to the pavement and died. The 25-year-old criminal had led a violent life before dying on the Towson street. He had been convicted for armed robbery and armed carjacking, but the system released him on parole. He had been arrested for violating that parole, but his hearing was scheduled for sometime in the Spring. In the meantime, he continued to walk free – with a gun.

Neighbors had little sympathy for the dead criminal and only compassion for the clerk, who was described as a very friendly, knowledgeable wine enthusiast.

Police report It is permissible to carry a firearm within a business in Maryland. They also said the clerk’s firearm was legally purchased and registered. The robber’s firearm’s history is uncertain and was certainly illegally possessed by the felon. Police continue to investigate, the results will be turned over to the district attorney for the determination if the clerk will be charged. The same system turned a convicted felon loose on the populace, and then didn’t reincarcerate when the felon violated the terms of his parole. This is another clear failure of the State’s catch and release rehabilitation system — as well as Maryland’s repressive gun-control laws.

Rob- This clerk had fractions of a second to respond.  He did not have time to go to the back office and open a gun safe.

John – The only concern I have for the store clerk is that it is Baltimore County.

3 Woman Uses Her Training – And a 45 – To Hold Off a Home-Invader

A Tennessee woman used her firearms training – and a 45 – to stop a home-invader and hold him for the police. For peace of mind, she had taken CCW training and purchased the FNH .45 handgun two years ago, but she thought she would never have to use her training. Her foresight paid off handsomely when a criminal with 40 prior arrests, one a mere six hours before, tried to break down her door.

Police arrived to the touching scenario of a woman holding the criminal at gunpoint on her front lawn. “I didn’t know what he had. So I didn’t want to let him out of my sight. I didn’t want him to attack me or shoot me or do whatever,” the woman said. No shots had been fired. The feckless thief is in jail on charges of Aggravated Burglary, Theft and Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.

Just maybe his stay in jail will be a little longer this time.

Rob- time to have a loaded gun nearby

4 Yes, there is a gun culture in California

53 year old Gilbert Minjares was putting his young daughter to bed when he heard crash coming from his back porch.  He put his daughter in the closet and grabbed his handgun.  A large man met him halfway to the back door.  Minjares raised his gun and the large man froze.  The homeowner backed the burglar out of the home and had him lay in the back yard.  The homeowner had to return to his home to grab his cell phone to call police.

Fortunately he told the police what he and the burglar looked like.  That paid off and  not one officer pointed a gun at me.”

As soon as the suspect was in custody Minjares ran back into his home to get his little girl, who he found hiding behind his clothes in his closet.

???win the fight to the phone?

I was just wondering if any of you use airguns.  I have found that shooting an airgun in my back yard can assuage, if only temporarily, my desire to get out to the range.  Soup cans and Dum-Dum lollipops make fun, reactive targets.

Since the motions are the same, I can do some practicing of my technique.  My collection consists of both air rifles and air handguns.

And for small varmints a 0.22 springer with the proper pellet is very effective.

Thanks for the great podcast.  I particularly appreciate the different opinions and personalities.  Recently a comment Rachel made alerted me to initially lube and keep an eye on the magazine release of my brand new Smith & Wesson Shield.

Love yalls show! Thank you for the great information. Thoroughly fabulous.

I have a question… Do u have any tips on traveling with a legal carry pistol? I’m going from Texas to Colorado on American Airlines. I noticed there’s legal carry with license from TX to CO… I’ll be checking bags…

Right?

Thanks!

Rashel from East Texas

Rob- give yourself time at the airport

Rachel- I had a great experience from TX to AZ. It added maybe 5min to my check-in time. Packed guns and ammo in lockboxes inside of my checked bag (ammo was inside ammo boxes), filled out their card, took it to a room where they swabbed it and scanned it (never opened it) and I was good to go.

Rob- baggage check in, not TSA.

Paul: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

Rob- My latest article is called “We Stopped Mass Murder”.  We know the mainstream media largely ignores citizen self-defense stories.  Oddly enough, we do the same.  A concealed carry holder stops a potential mass murder whenever the stop a robbery at a convenience store.  Those articles are up at Clash Daily.  Ammoland, and my blog at slow facts dot wordpress dot com.  John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money.

We have read a lot about adding the No-Fly and Terrorist Watch List to the NICS Denied category. There have been plenty of strong arguments against this on Constitutional grounds and this is good. Here is an argument against doing it from a practical perspective. Adding suspected terrorists to the NICS Denied list makes it into an early warning system for terrorists to see if they are being watched. If a terrorist wants to see if he is under suspicion, all he (or she) needs to do is try to buy a gun from a FFL. If it comes back denied, then the terrorist is forewarned and will go underground. That is not good counter-terrorism policy.

That and more is at only guns and money dot blogspot dot com.

John – It was a typical week for me. I taught, I worked, I went to a craft show with Barb. Interestingly, I’m seeing a handful of craft vendors using cartridge brass to make jewelry and other craft items. I think that’s cool and it is showing the growth and acceptance of the gun culture especially amongst women.

Rob- Don’t wear that in New Jersey or Washington, D.C.!

1-Rachel- San Bernardino Terrorism

Make no mistake, it was not climate change, not a random attack, not workplace violence.  This was not simply a mass shooting. San Bernardino Was. An. Act. Of. War.  And President Obama is aggressively trying to to disarm the American People in the face of this very personal new way of war .

Fourteen people died and a dozen more were injured when a radicalized Islamist and his Jihadist bride invaded a Holiday party of San Bernardino County employees. They carried illegally modified AR-15s, pistols and improvised explosives. They broached  the government building’s gun-free zone, making it a hunting preserve for the violent. None of California’s hundreds of gun-control laws made one bit of difference. The terrorists were able to escaped their carnage well before the police responded. Unaccounted hours later, they died in a hail of police bullets.

The bleeding hadn’t stopped before Hillary Clinton beclowned herself on Twitter demanding stricter gun control. Obama lagged by only minutes when he used CBS to further divide a shattered nation and push the blatantly unConstitutional “No Fly – No Buy” anti-gun bill. The following day he ignored the obvious Islamist connections to focus on the guns. He Ignored the organization that is spreading across the Middle East like a cancer, swallowing land, people, oil and wealth. It is almost certain that ISIS reached across the oceans to put two people on their murderous path – with that reach, it can easily put any weapons or explosives in other hands if required. Yet the administration is preparing a host of gun-control executive actions to further limit American’s gun rights. Obama has scheduled time Sunday evening to discuss the terror threat. Afterwards, law-abiding gun owners will likely have no doubt just who Obama considers the real threat.

The deaths and injuries in San Bernardino make us sick, not only for the loss of innocent life, but the realization that this is part of a coming wave of Jihadi terrorism in the United States. As has been said before, one of the best ways to combat this decentralized terror war is to decentralize the response – and a well-armed populace does that best. We need the Second Amendment now, more than ever. To keep it, our lives and our freedom, we will fight anyone necessary; even you, Mr Obama.

John: The New York Times, often a mouthpiece for this administration, filled their broadsheet with an extraordinarily rare above the fold front page editiorial demanding gun confiscation, “for the good of their fellow citizens.”

Rob- This murder took place in California, the geo-political home of the “Don’t worry, we’ll take care of you” big government.  This was a shooting in a government building, so in a gun free zone.  On the campus of a school for the disabled.. another gun free zone.  The murderers bought their weapons legally.. well, except for the dozen bombs they made.  The cosmetic modifications that made their guns illegal in California took only seconds to install.  That tells us that gun control laws don’t stop, or even delay, armed criminals or terrorists.

The muslim murderers used pipe bombs.  Are we going to have a background check and waiting period for plumbing supplies?

As immigrants, two of the murderers were vetted by the immigration service and cleared to enter the United States.  Government security checks are a joke.

Gary comment- The president said global warming shot up the Christmas party.  You mean he was wrong?

Rachel- we agree. But what will we do?

John – Democrats and other progressives in the media were extremely disdainful of the prayers that were being sent by Republican politicians. The prayers that had been requested by the survivors.

Rob-

2- John- POLITICAL RESPONSES TO THE SAN BERNARDINO ATTACK

There has been widespread criticism of President Obama’s response.

-Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said California’s strict gun-control laws failed to prevent the San Bernardino mass shooting.   Quote “California has the toughest laws in the country. We probably have the second toughest (here in Maryland). It hasn’t stopped violent crime. We have more than 315 murders here in Baltimore City this year.” close quote.

-Two New York Sheriffs made public statements for licensed owners to carry concealed.

-Detroit police Chief James Craig said violent extremists were reluctant to target Detroit, as they had Paris last month, for fear armed citizens would shoot back.

“A lot of Detroiters have CPLs (concealed pistol licenses), and the same rules apply to terrorists as they do to some gun-toting thug,” Chief James Craig said. “If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.”

-Oakland University criminal justice professor Daniel Kennedy agreed that terrorists would be reluctant to attack armed citizens.  “We don’t have laboratories where we can test these theories, but there is something to the argument that terrorists want a high body count — and if they can only shoot a few people before they’re taken out themselves, it wouldn’t have the kind of impact they want.

-Ex-New York City police officer and terrorism expert Beau Dietl said he’s armed and ready to face any threat — and encouraged more citizens to do the same. “I’ve got a Glock on my hip.  If everyone was prepared to get involved, maybe we’d have fewer casualties. Even domestic terrorists hit places where they don’t think they’ll get much resistance, like movie theaters.  I think the answer is, whoever is able to carry a gun legally, it would help.”

-University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. said students should carry concealed while on campus.  It just blows my mind when I see that the president of the United States [saying] that the answer to circumstances like that is more gun control.  We have a certification class.  Take it.  Falwell believes if more “good people” had legally carried guns where terrorist attacks have happened, it could have “ended those Muslims before they walked in.”  The university’s four-hour permit class is offered by the campus police department.

-Congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas said the Obama administration has let loose criminals and massive numbers of violent terrorists in the U.S. so that the president can eventually tell people to “give up your Second Amendment rights because I let all these terrorists in.”  Close quote

-Even Time Magazine gave gun owners reasonable coverage“Assault weapons are not more powerful, they do not shoot more bullets, and they do not shoot faster. We would not be a safer society if we could eliminate all of the assault weapons because people could substitute for them non-assault weapons that are exactly the same.”

Rob- That is a wide range of commentators.

John – I think a lot of people are commenting with their pocket books. They are buying guns and getting CCW licenses or permits. I saw a picture of lines in seattle of people applying for their carry permits

Rob- black friday?

3- Gary- Measure to Turn the No-Fly List Into a No-Buy List Defeated in Senate.

Capitalizing on the fears surrounding the day-old San Bernardino terror tragedy, US Senate Democrats tried to pass the “No Fly – No Buy” bill that would eliminate the right to own or buy firearms for anyone finding themselves on the secret government “Terror Watch List”.  As we’ve discussed in prior weeks, Dianne Feinstein’s measure would have eliminated 2nd and 5th Amendment rights for anyone put on the list for any reason. Along with the right to keep and bear arms, due process and judicial review would end, as the reason for inclusion in the list could not be challenged or even known.

Any reasoned analysis shows the dangerers of this legislation. The current Terror Watch List contains roughly a million Americans, many entries are in error. The list is secret, and the whys and whos that put the names there are also secret. The government has no requirement to remove or correct the information. The list is a very blunt, malformed tool.

There is little in the “No Fly – No Buy” legislation to prevent government bureaucrats from placing any person or group they dislike on the list. The legislation is an unConstitutional assault on the rights of Americans – totalitarian at its very core. Civil Libertarians should be screaming – but those beholden to the Progressive Left are strangely silent. Fortunately, the much maligned NRA is once again in the forefront of defending American Rights.

The vote was 45 to 54 with only Mark Kirk of Illinois being the only Rino voting for it.

The bill is dead, for now. However, like a bad penny – this bad bill will return.

The Democrats also brought back Manchin-Toomey universal background checks. It, too, was defeated. However, the margin was closer with RINOs Mark Kirk (IL), John McCain (AZ), Susan Collins (ME), and Pat Toomey (PA) voting for it.

John -. I watched the vote and debate on this and the Manchin-Toomey vote. An interesting argument was made against adding the no-fly list to the NICS denied list because terrorists could find they were being followed by merely attempting to buy a gun. This argument was made by Larry Keane of NSSF. I think this is something few proponents have considered.

Rachel-even those who call themselves conservatives, or gun carriers, support these measures. Want govt protection to feel safer. Need to take responsibility for themselves. Freedom is not safe.

Gary –

Rob-  MT requires universal registration.

John – I’ve looked into the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database. It really does have very weak criteria for inclusion.

4- Rob- NJ2AS record sergeant’s bigotry against gun owners.. and small people

You don’t have the right to own a gun in New Jersey.  You can ask the state for permission to buy a gun.  The state has all the time in the world to think about their answer.  If and when they answer, they can say no for any reason, or really, for no reason at all.  The New Jersey Second Amendment Association recorded a number or law enforcement officers as they described how they issue permits to purchase a firearm.  Here is one of their video recordings  where a police sergeant says a citizen is too small to own a gun.

(Insert Audio Clip Here)

New Jersey citizen Carol Bowne was murdered by a criminal stalker while she waited for a permit to buy a gun.  She waited 47 days for an answer.  Carol was murdered before the state answered her request.  Carol Bowne weighed 90 pounds.  She might have died because a New Jersey Law Enforcement Officer thought she was too small to protect herself with a firearm.  The NJ2AS will release another video tomorrow.

John- Did you hear the Sergeant?  He said he is never overturned.. no matter what excuse he gives for denying a permit.  The fix is in between the police and the judges.

Rachel-  The New Jersey judges say the permit denials were not an infringement because someone, somewhere, at sometime was actually granted a permit to buy a firearm after they waited long enough.  Yeah, I’d say that is an infringement.

Rob- I don’t respect this Policemen.  So are the men in blue going to police their own and straighten this out so citizens are treated fairly?  I doubt it.  I hate bigots.

John – Remember that old quote – God made men, Samuel Colt made them equal.

5- Rachael- The Democrats KNEW they were lying about guns

Second Amendment advocate David Hardy recently went digging in the Clinton Library archives.  He came up with this money quote.  It was sent from President Jimmy Carter’s press secretary Jody Powell to the press secretary of the Clinton Administration, George Stephanopoulos.

Quote- ““Much as I hate to say it, the NRA is effective primarily because it is largely right when it claims that most gun control measures inconvenience and threaten the law-abiding while having little or no impact on violent crime and criminals.  I support registration in principle. But two questions need to be asked. Are the people causing the problem going to comply voluntarily? If not, do you have a way to effectively enforce compliance?”  Close quote.

The cover sheet shows a handwritten note.  George Stephanopoulos commented in a handwritten note as he sent the memo on to President Clinton.  Quote “This makes a lot of sense.”

They knew the truth about the failure of gun control for the last 20+ years.

Rob- The Clinton’s lost all credibility with me.

Rachel-

6- John- Where do thugs and terrorists get guns?

The main stream media says that honest gun owners like you and me are giving guns to criminals.  It ain’t so.  Witness the break-in at the Lincoln Stoddard Army Reserve Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.  The breakin was well-planned and bold.  A single thief broke into the alarmed building through the roof. Once inside, he cut a hole in the top of the weapons vault.  The vault was made from steel reinforced concrete.  The thief breached the vault using power tools.

Security video showed a man making several trips from the armory to his car.  He took at least six M-4 rifles and 10 handguns.  He left behind traces of blood.

Law enforcement matched the blood to 34-year-old James Morales, who is out on bail from New York State.  Morales was charged with child rape and indecent assault on a child under 14 years old.  Later investigations confirmed Mister Morales’s electronic monitoring bracelet at the scene of the firearms theft.  Morales was arrested.  He’d been at the armory recently to receive his discharge papers from the national guard.  Some of the weapons were recovered in New York City.

Comment ??-  You can certainly get illegal guns into the US if you can move billions of dollars of drugs and millions of dollars across the border.

comment-?? We’re told that civilians are the source of guns in crime, but the average time from when a gun is legally sold to a private citizen until the time the gun is used in a crime is over 12 years.

7- Gary- NY Assemblyman Silver convicted.. is Cuomo next?

The new York SAFE act turned New York firearms owners into criminals.  Three men forced it through in the middle of the night.  Of the three, one has been convicted in court, one is on trial, and the last one, Andrew Cuomo, still sits in the New York governor’s mansion.

Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was convicted of a 5 million dollar public-corruption case.  Silver’s conviction automatically removed him from office and barred him from ever holding a state position again.  Silver was found guilty of honest-services fraud, extortion and money-laundering.  He traded political favors and then lied about it.  He will probably spend the rest of his life in prison.

The jury is still out on New York Senate Leader Dean Skelos.  Skelos is charged with influence-peddling along with his son.

The federal prosecutor says Cuomo is next.  I wonder how much a New York anti-gun billionaire paid to have the New York Safe act pass in the middle of the night?

Rob- Silver got contracts steered to friends and took a cut.  He got property rezoned.

John- One down, two to go.

8- Rob- Mainstream Lies at 11 o’clock

Pity the mainstream news media.  They lose their jobs if we simply ignore them.  The BBC and Mother Jones said there were more than one mass public shooting a day in the United States.  They lied, but it is important to understand how and why.

It starts with FBI statistics.  The rate of mass murder has been fairly constant for years.  Under order of President Obama, the FBI redefined mass murder.  The old definition used to be four victims killed with a gun in a public place.  The Obama administration changed the number to two people in 2012.  Some archives also dropped the requirement for the homicide to be in a public place.  Some counted the murderer as one of the victims.  Those changes are important.

The new definition reclassified and confuses every domestic murder-suicide done in private with a mass public shooting done in a school or at a mall.  The new definition produced the expected, and the politically desired,  jump in “public shooting statistics”.

That still wasn’t enough.   Some of the unofficial data now comes from online news agencies instead of the FBI.  Rather than only counting the victims who were killed according to police reports, these source let Google do the work to add up the reported number of injured.  That is probably the data Mother Jones and the BBC used to inflate their news reports.   What used to be described as a Friday Night gangland drive-by in Chicago, is now a “mass public shooting”.  The news media doesn’t tell you that most of their “mass public shootings” were not murders at all.

The commercial press tells their viewers what they want to believe in the simplest possible terms.  “Guns”..  “NRA”.. and “America”.. are familiar icons around the world.  The announcer describes the news as if he’s reading from child’s picture book.

Why lie like that?  The fact is, the United States is boring.  TV viewers would have changed the channel if the reporter told the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Rachel- Like Dr. Lott says, we have to have good statistics…and then we have to use them correctly.

John – Interestingly enough, the national editor of Mother Jones had an op-ed in the NY Times saying the Times had overestimated the number of mass shootings.

Rachel- Hey, this is good news.  If the reporters told the truth all the time we wouldn’t have a polite society podcast.

9- Rachel- Black lives don’t matter if blacks pulled the trigger in democrat towns

We had three people shot at from a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado.  The media didn’t tell you that none of the patients or staff were shot.  The murderer shot from the Planned Parenthood building and shot people in parking lots up to 350 yard away.  That isn’t the story the media wants to tell.  The story was used for political purposes instead.

Black on black crime doesn’t make the news despite the shocking toll of dead and injured.  Right after the planned parenthood shooting, several men shot at a park full of 300 people in a gang retaliation shooting.  17 were injured.  All the gang members were black.  Five were arrested.  Most had prior records for drugs.  Bail was set at 1.7 million dollars.  That happened in New Orleans.

Chicago has similar shootings every weekend.  We don’t know why the media is silent about those shootings.  Were they silent because the victims are black, or because the politicians are democrats?

Our condolences to the citizens who must live there and the injured.

John – More people were injured at Sally’s Beauty Supply. Why not call

10- John- Doctors urged to treat gun ownership as a disease

Judith Katzburg spoke at the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting.  She spoke during a panel titled, “The Tipping Point: Activating a Public Health Movement to Address Gun Violence.”  She urged doctors to “push the agenda” securing gun control.  Quote, “We are hoping to forge a national coalition of partners to push the agenda of a public health approach to gun violence prevention forward.”  Katzburg works for Veterans Affairs in their VA Greater LA Healthcare System. Gun control proponents want to control a federal agency and implement new gun regulations unilaterally.  They can act outside the law and without the hindrances of Congress, much as environmentalists have exercised control through the EPA.

Rob- Your tax dollars at work. And the VA leaves vets to die.

John – Think how many vets have been added to the NICS denied list by the VA.

11- Gary- Pew Research – Gun Homicide Down 49%

You’d never know it listening the mainstream media or our president, but gun homicides are down 49% from their 1993 peak according to a study from the Pew Research Center.  Most Americans are unaware that gun crime is lower today than it was two decades ago, and the vast majority think it is significantly higher.

The government statistics used by Pew don’t lie. Gun crime is decreasing even while American are buying more guns. These facts destroy the anti-gunners firmly held beliefs that guns cause crime. These inconvenient truths are probably why the media and politicians don’t want to publicize these facts. We strongly recommend that you take the time to read the pew Center’s excellent report. It’s fascinating reading. You’ll find all sorts of interesting facts the elites don’t want you to know. We’ve included a link in the show notes.

Rob- Is violence a required part of the news..and sold to the viewers.

John –

Rachel- Gun Quote–  This week’s gun quote came from journalist and second amendment commentator Bob Owens.  Bob tweeted “Seriously. Conservatives own 200+ million guns and 12 trillion rounds of ammo. If we were violent, you’d know it.”

Rachel- Hang on everybody, we’ll be back with Doctor Robert Young and Radley Balko.

John 1- Friday Night Death

A Friday night’s adventure resulted in murder charges for two home invaders. and a ride to the morgue for the third.  The three men decided to break down a Houston area homeowner’s door. The residents heard the noise, scattered and hid. When the criminals entered the bedroom,

the homeowner fired once through the closet door.

Arriving deputies found a blood trail, but were not able to find the suspect on scene or in any nearby hospitals.  When police stopped a car 6 miles from the burglary, they found the intruder dead in the backseat. His confederates tried to run, but were caught after a chase. The two will face murder charges for the death of the third, which occurred during the commission of a felony.

Gary 2- Bringing a Knife to a Gunfight
A man talked his way into the hotel room of a Army soldier – and into an armed  burglary rap. The robber posed as a hotel maintenance worker checking the plumbing. He was convincing enough that the soldier allowed him into the room – where the criminal pulled a knife. The off-duty soldier pulled a gun right back and ordered the hapless thief to the ground.  Officers arrived and arrested the 43-year-old suspect on suspicion of burglary and related charges. No shots were fired.

Comment: Don’t let anybody you don’t know or haven’t verified into your personal space. Just say Hell No! And have a weapon on you. You never know when.

Rachel-off-duty soldiers apparently are better off and safer carrying

Rob- 3- Four against three – and a gun
Early in the Ohio morning, four men kicked in the front door of a Ravenna home. They rushed the two men and a woman occupying the home. However, one of the occupants had a gun, and used it to defend the trio. Two invaders  were shot and all beat a hasty retreat.  The two wounded thugs didn’t make it far before being arrested with non-life-threatening wounds. Their two confederates remains at large.

Rachel

Rob- know the distance and the time it takes to hit a target.

Rachel 4- Climbing to Their Death
Two athletic burglars climbed up a balcony and into the afterlife. The balcony lead to a Georgian apartment, which contained two residents and a gun. One suspect was found dead in the apartment, another man expired in the field behind the apartment house.

The situation is evolving and uncertain as the 911 tape has one of the roommates saying “I think that’s why I shot that guy. They were running out the door and I pulled the trigger.” Neighbors believe the roommates had been robbed the prior weekend, perhaps by the same men. Police have not released the names of the two dead and are questioning the two men who live in the apartment.

John 5- Detroit Area Crime Spree Ends
A wounded Concealed Pistol License holder, a security guard and the police teamed up to stop a long running crime spree in the Detroit area’s ethnic food trucks and bars.

The owner of the Happy Bar argued with an armed masked robber and was shot in the leg for his resistance. The owner then pulled his CPL weapon and shot the robber multiple times. The ventilated robber’s confederates grabbed him and eventually dumped him at a nearby hospital’s emergency room. Before they got away from the hospital, a security guard noted the car license plate. Police arrested the wounded robber and tracked the car to a residence where another was apprehended. The third is still on the loose.

The thieves are suspected in a long string of food truck and bar robberies.

A bar employee also carries, claiming that desperate times calls for desperate measures. “This is Detroit, we live in Detroit,” she said. Sporting a wounded leg, the bar owner is back at work. This is Detroit, indeed.

Rob

Gary- 6 wrong apartment

A woman living in Stone Mountain Georgia was followed as she entered an apartment complex.  A man forced his way into the apartment and assaulted the woman.  That is when a man who lives in the apartment appeared with his gun.  He shot the assailant.  They then called police and remained in the apartment.  The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene.  No charges were filed against the victims.

Our web search showed several assaults at this apartment complex, but we suspect the assailant knew the victim.

Rachel- You will have seconds to respond if someone breaks down your door. How long would it take you to get your gun right now?

Rob- comment- Rachel, you’ve asked that before and you convinced me to carry at home.  I was talking with a trainer about this situation.  You can’t stand back and press the trigger.  You have to grab onto the assailant and hold on to put metal on meat.

John- We post each of our news and defensive gun use articles at Polite Society Podcast.com  Please take a minute and share them with a friend.

Listener e-mail discussion

Rob- I apologize to our listeners.  A few emails slipped through the cracks while we were off a couple of weeks ago.

Rob-  The first one begins- Gentlemen,

[If you post this or use it on the podcast, please remove my last name. Thanks!]

In case you weren’t aware, POTUS signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2016 yesterday, including a provision for SECDEF to establish a process for commanders to allow carrying of firearms on a military installation if deemed necessary for personal- or force-protection reasons. It remains to be seen how local policies will change, since SECDEF and installation commanders have a lot of latitude in the way they implement this policy.

Assuming local commanders allow it (yes, a big assumption), the policy will most likely require compliance with local laws. There are many states, unfortunately, where military members still cannot obtain a carry license in their host state due to restrictive “may issue” policies or discrimination against nonresidents. My current state of Illinois is a prime example. This leaves the federal military installation’s security at the mercy of its host state, and its members unable to carry either on or off the installation. Yikes!

I’ve written more here if you wish to read it: http://morsel.info/?p=517

Happy Thanksgiving,

Kevin

John comment- In the defense department funding bill-

EPA can’t regulate lead bullets

surplus arms go to Civilian Marksmanship Program

carry on military base up to base commanders

Rachel- Jeff sent in this short one

I really appreciate your mention of the four rules of gun handling which precede each broadcast. Thank you

Jeff

Rachel: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

Rob- I wrote about insane murderers and insane politicians.  Muslim Terrorists killed over 500 people in France this year, and yesterday, President Obama said the United States is the only country where we have public violence like a gunman shooting three people near a Planned Parenthood office.  The Democrat solution is to disarm you.. and call the terrorism “workplace violence”.  That article is up at Clash Daily, at Ammoland, and at my blog at slow facts dot wordpress dot com.

John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money

If you or I were to use a company credit card to get a cash advance so as to gamble at a casino on company time, we’d be fired. However, if you are a BATFE Special Agent who did this, you get promoted to Special Agent in Charge of a Field Division as well as being made a member of the Senior Executive Service. The Dept of Justice Office of Inspector General’s report does not name which one of the 25 SAC’s is the culprit. It says something about the culture of a law enforcement organization when something like this is glossed over.

That and more is at only guns and money dot blogspot dot com.

Rob- I wonder what that employee knows that makes them so “valuable”

Gary- We would like to thank Charlie Foxtrot for writing up show notes for us. Even though you don’t hear him on the air he is certainly part of what you do hear. Look at his blog at not one more gun law dot blogspot dot com

Rob: That wraps up another episode of the Polite Society Podcast.  I’d like to thank Doctor Robert Young and Radley Balko for joining us today.  Paul should be back next week.  I’ll be there, John?  Rachel?  Gary?  I’m looking forward to it.  – Until the next time…

Gary: stay safe,

Rachel: be aware,

John: and we’ll see you down the road.
