1- Introduction

“An armed society is a polite society.. and this is the Polite Society Podcast where we support and report on civilian self-defense.”
Paul: Welcome to the Polite Society Podcast powered by the Firearms Policy Coalition recorded on Sunday, November 29, 2015.  I’m Paul Lathrop.
Rob- I’m Rob Morse and President Obama said the world would be a fine place if only we had more gun regulations.
John: I’m John Richardson, we have a lot of news, and we’ll talk about being on a terrorists watch list.. with no way to get off.
Gary: I’m Gary Daugherty and in one of our defensive gun use stories, a Houston gun owner had to fight off eight criminals .. so climb aboard
Rob: strap in
John : and hang on!
Paul:  episode 356 starts right now.
Show intro music.

Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- I took a great training course in San Antonio, Texas taught by Ben Branam, Bob Mayne, Chaz Murray and Tracy Thronburg.  Meeting them and John Edeen was absolutely worth it.  This is the class you want after you can present your firearm from a holster.  I wish every concealed carrier took a class like this.  As a bonus, I saw bullets in flight.

I carried in Texas, and when I came home I found my Louisiana permit waiting for me.  I’ve carried all week.

(Anyone want to know more about the class?  point shooting, close contact defense, Sul position 360 scan, one handed shooting, shooting from unusual positions, and we got to shoot at night with a flashlight)

John – This week has been mostly about family. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with my daughter and son-in-law. My granddaughter Olivia Grace is just a smiling, laughing, crawling bundle of joy.

In terms of gun-related stuff, there have been a few things. I had coffee yesterday morning with David Yamane who we’ve had on the show. He does academic research on Gun Culture 2.0 and blogs about it at his blog by the same name. I also have been taking advantage of too many of the Black Friday sales to finish getting parts for various projects at a good price. I made the mistake of checking Arfcom’s thread on good deals. Finally, I got my wife Barb’s Christmas present. All I’ll say in case she is listening is that it is black and purple and made by Mossberg.
Gary – What training do you have coming up?
Rob- Where is your Illinois meeting?
ISRA – Grassroots
You would find items of interest in your area, with guest speakers, legislative updates, open discussion and more.  While the initial roll-out of the meetings might be similar, expect the grassroots group in your area to evolve to be more meaningful to the people in attendance.

2- News 1

1 Gun Salesman in Chief
(WHERE IS THE LINK?) In the wake of the Colorado Planned Parenthood shooting, Obama immediately took to his teleprompters to demand tighter controls on military-style weapons. As if millions of gun owners must bear the whip for the actions of one demented man. We certainly mourn the deaths of the policeman and the other two persons; however, the proposed restrictions will not — can not — eliminate these tragedies as the president petulantly demanded. The cost of these restrictions will be far greater to our rights and freedoms than any possible gains.

Obama declared “enough is enough” in a speech just hours after the resolution of the incident. The clearly piqued Obama stated that we have to do the infamous “something” about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. The demonization of the commonly available firearm through the nonsensical labels of military-”style” weapons and “weapons of war” are as false as the demand to “do something.”

With these demands, Obama looks to to distract from his flailing presidency and provide the Democrat candidates with an issue that will ignite their somewhat disinterested Progressive base. But, we can assure our pen and phony president, this too will not pass.

What we know about the Colorado murder suspect.

Rob comment- Doesn’t Colorado already have magazine capacity limits and mandatory registration?.. yet those gun control measures failed.. again.

John – One thing that I learned in a class on public policy analysis was that often the best option is to do nothing.

2 Obama Wants Gun Control During His Last Months in Office

It seems that in the last months of the Obama administration, the worst is yet to come.   As his administration grinds toward a halt, the president is facing a foreign policy in collapse, a faltering economy, the unworkable mess of Obamacare, a reinvigorated opposition, and an agenda that has thankfully fallen far short of the fundamental change that he hoped to force on America.

In his last presidential year, finally free of the election constraints, Obama seems poised to abuse his executive powers. And the nation’s gun owners are clearly in his sights. Last week, Obama publicized his intention to elevate gun control to the top of his agenda in his final year. In the GQ magazine interview, Obama said he feels “looser” and more confident in his decisions and thus more willing to put his opinions above all others. Presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett says Obama is not a lame-duck and promises that “Really big things are coming.”

Cheered on by his minions in the media, Obama is pushing the blatantly fascistic Terror Watch List Gun Ban. This bill would put our basic rights at the mercy of secret, unaccountable, unchallengeable government bureaucracies – an obvious, immediate threat to our liberties. There’s little in the current proposals to prevent the president from declaring the NRA a terrorist organization and trying to disarm it’s 5 million members. The bill has little chance of passage, but it’s failure might provide the excuse Obama needs to wield his phone and pen once again. As could any mass murder event.

It seems this last year will be the most dangerous of the already disastrous Obama years. You know what you need to do: stay involved, talk to your family, friends and the people you meet, join a gun rights organization and contribute your money and time. But most of all, stay aware. These are dangerous times. And they’re getting more dangerous by the day.

John – If you are on any the gun control gun lists such as Brady, they are constantly pushing for Obama to do extra-legal efforts by using his executive powers.

Paul – We can get good things done while Obama is in office.

3 You’re on a list and you can’t get off

Following the president’s lead, many anti-gun politicians released press releases last week saying we should stop all gun transfers to people who end up on the TSA no fly list or the FBI’s terrorist watch list.  There is at least one large problem with those proposals.  We have no way to find out if we are on such a list, find out why we are on the list and find out how to exonerate ourselves from false charges placing us on the list. Now I’m sure you’re as trusting as I am and couldn’t imagine a politician putting gun owners or political rival on the list simply to disarm them.

Right.  I thought so.

We have due process here in the United States.. at least until the president eliminates them with his phone and his pen.  This raises another question.  If these are KNOWN terrorists why are they walking around free in the first place rather than facing legal charges in court?

Paul- as you’d expect, the anti-gun politicians blamed the NRA for supporting terrorists when the NRA opposed this extra legal restriction on gun owners.

4 DC Police Chief Says Citizens Should Prepare For Active Shooters And Terrorist Attacks
This certainly got our attention: Noted hard-line progressive DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier is now saying that citizens should either run, hide or fight an active shooter or terrorist. She now holds that taking out the gunmen in a Paris-style attack is the “best option” for citizens”. But how? The same Chief Lanier has been active in denying DC residents the right to keep and carry firearms. She continues to defy the US Supreme Court and their pro Second Amendment rulings.

While we heartily agree with Chief Lanier’s advice not to cower, but to fight the terrorists; we wonder just what she expects the second class citizens of DC to fight with?  She and her cohorts have effectively disarmed the DC populace — while, as Paris shows, not really doing anything to stop the terrorist from obtaining real weapons of war. Let’s call this a case of reality intruding on Lanier’s carefully constructed gun-free fantasies. Lanier’s sudden change in direction has us wondering: just what the heck does she know? And why isn’t she telling us?

Rob- There are only 51 licensed citizens in Washington, D.C.

Paul- what are we to fight them with harsh words?

5 Magazine Restrictions Don’t Reduce Mass Murder

Politicians waging war on our right of self-defense told us that magazine capacity restrictions would stop or greatly reduce mass murders.  That claim always sounded silly to any gun owner.  Now, criminologist Gary Kleck tested that claim.. and he found out that anti-rights politicians lied to us.

We saw capacity restrictions written into law in California, Colorado and New York after the murders at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut.  Kleck researched both recent and past murders to see if the bans on large-capacity magazines made a difference in the number of casualties.  Kleck assumed that a magazine ban would actually keep a mass murderer from using a high capacity magazine if the accessory was outlawed.

The FBI classifies mass murder as being four or more victims, but Kleck examined 88 mass shooting incidents in which more than six people were killed or wounded.  He chose 6 victims as a threshold since even a simple revolver could kill six people without reloading and a small number of victims might not measure the claim of increased lethality with high capacity magazines.  Even with this restrictive definition Kleck found that magazines holding over 10 rounds were used in only 21 of the 88 mass murder incidents.  That means in 76 percent of the incidents, a large-capacity magazine ban would have made no difference in the number of victims.

Kleck then analyzed the 21 incidents in which a large-capacity magazine was used. In every case, the shooters carried either multiple guns or multiple magazines. Therefore, even without a high-capacity magazine, the shooters could easily switch guns or magazines.

Kleck found out that the rate of fire in mass shooting was so slow that having to change guns or magazines did not reduce the number of casualties.

Mass murderers want to kill a lot of people.  Their desire leads to a large number of casualties until police arrive.  The choice of a large-capacity magazine may reflect the murderer’s desire, but it does not cause more deaths.

Gary- This makes so much sense to me.  The police won’t arrive for 10 minutes, and it only takes me a second to reload.  Of course magazine capacity doesn’t change the number of victims.

John – The key to these mass murders was the desire to kill many people. Not the tool.

3-  News 2

1 It must be nice to be above the law at taxpayer expense

Gavin Newsom is the Lieutenant Governor of California, and the Democrat heir apparent to become governor in 2018.  That takes money, and Newsom knows right where to turn for campaign contributions.  Newsom sponsored a ballot initiative in California to outlaw all ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.  The initiative would also require a background check to buy ammunition.  This in turn, would require that all stores that sell ammunition would have to become Federal Firearms Licensees.  This is another tax on honest gun owners in California.

We reported on the Chicago study that showed criminals never get their guns at gun shows and gun stores, so criminals never go through a background check.  Criminals get their guns illegally, so criminals would simply get their ammunition the same way.  None of those facts matter if the low-information California voter only listens the the headlines in the news.

If that wasn’t enough to make your blood boil, Newsom has a hand picked armed security detail that costs the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars a year.  Guns for me, but not for you little people.

Rob- Requires an instant background check, but might use a California background check system.

I don’t think the policemen who work on Newsom’s security detail are members of Oathkeepers.

John – I wonder if Newsom wants to have a 10 day waiting period for ammo as well.

2 Of course they want guns on base

The Rasmussen organization took a poll of almost 2 thousand service men.  By a margin of over five to one, the servicemen want to carry firearms for self-defense on base.  The support was strong in every service, in the reserve, and among retired military.  There is a rider on the current defense authorization act that allows servicemen to carry concealed.  President Obama even said he would sign it once the legislation makes its way to his desk.

3 Only conservatives can be racist at University of Texas

Two Texas professors said that the right to bear arms on campus wasn’t about self-defense.  The UT profs claimed the desire to be armed was about white males feeling threatened since they were racists and theists.  That claim was answered rather well.

A female hispanic economics student from Texas Christian University said self-defense is pro-choice.  In this case, it is the choice not to be raped. Quote, “feminists are looking at the aftermath of rape but are neglecting to look at ways to enable women to stop it from happening in the first place. How can feminists advocate for protection of their uteruses but condemn the right to protect their whole bodies? Women should be fighting for more than just their reproductive systems.”  Close quote.

A black female graduate student answered the charges also.  She said, Quote “As a black woman and a graduate student at UT-Dallas, I have no interest in displaying white male power to slaves, women, African-Americans, or anyone else, and I’m certainly not interested in pushing back against the Civil Rights Movement or promoting an ideology of white racism.  I am, however, interested in being able to defend myself should the need arise. Campus carry isn’t about arming dangerous bigots; it’s about ensuring that I’m able to defend myself if confronted by one.”  close quote.

Well said.  The university has to develop a plan to allow concealed carry on campus by next summer.

4 We had to destroy his gun safe in order to save it

Celebrity and  professional poker player Dan Bilzerian was away when his home was robbed in September.  A security alarm and a caretaker at his Hollywood home stopped thieves from taking Bilzerian’s guns.  Bilzerian had most of his firearms locked securely in his gun vault.  That stopped the thieves, but the vault didn’t stop the Los Angeles Police.  The police broke into the vault, took nine handguns, but left valuable long guns behind.  The police said they were taking the guns “for the owner’s protection”.  It took eight weeks for a lawyer to get Bilzerian’s guns back, but the police kept the magazines and the ammunition.

Attorney Joseph Silvoso from the law firm of Michel & Associates, said he has seen numerous incidents in which police responded to a crime scene, and then confiscated guns without a warrant.

Another Los Angeles gun owner had previously filed a 4.8 million dollar lawsuit against the LA PD for a similar invasion.. and destruction of his firearms collection.

Paul- no, officer, you can not search for my firearms.  You can not have them, secure them or touch them without a warrant.

Gary- I read the entire article in the Washington Times.. and they do not like the Los Angeles Police Department.

Comment from Charlie Foxtrot- From personal observation: The LAPD, aka Lap Dogs, is a highly politicized organization. Like their political masters, the department is rabidly anti-gun. They’re also more interested in writing speeding tickets and harassing jaywalkers than confronting the drug gangs that own the city’s underside.  There are a tremendous amount of good cops wearing the LAPD Blue – but the organization’s leaders are hopelessly, aggressively politically correct.

5 Michigan FINALLY Becomes Shall Issue

The state of Michigan will finally close down its three-member county gun boards on Tuesday.  These boards will no longer issue, deny, revoke or suspend firearms licenses. Now, county clerks will issue or deny a license after the state police conduct a background check.  An initial license will have to be issued or disqualified within 45 days of fingerprints being taken instead of within 45 days of a licensing board getting a fingerprint analysis from the state police. A renewal must be issued or denied within 30 days instead of the current 60-day deadline.

This is another step toward making Michigan a true “shall-issue” state, in which a permit has to be issued as long as an applicant has taken a gun safety course, has no felony convictions and meets other requirements such as not being subject to a protection order.

4- News 3

1 Signs Come and Signs Go at Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo put its no-guns allowed signs up again.  The signs came down three months ago after the zoo was threatened with a lawsuit.  That is when Texas Law Shield sent a demand letter to the Houston Zoo because  the zoo sits on city property even though the zoo is privately owned.

Now, the Houston zoo claims it is an educational institution and does not have to comply with Texas concealed carry laws.  A spokesman for Texas law shield said the zoo’s argument is flimsy because there is no educational curriculum, academic accreditation, or the ability to obtain an academic degree at the zoo.   Citizens may file complaints about unlawful gun restrictions with the Texas  attorney general’s office.  Fines run up to $10,000 per day.

Rob- A teacher takes a second job and the restaurant becomes an educational institution?

2 Voices of Reason in the United States

Some responsible broadcasters understand the purpose of armed citizens.  You and I will always be the first responders until the government gets there.  Broadcaster John Stossel pointed out that there were 1500 people at the music concert in France where they were attacked by muslim terrorists.  There were thousands at the soccer stadium where they were attacked.  What might have happened if a few of the 1,500 concert attendees in Paris’ Bataclan theater had guns?  The police unit didn’t come for more than a half hour. The terrorists had time to kill, reload and kill again.  They killed their victims at point blank range.  Stossel asks “If a few people in the theater were armed, might they have killed the killers?”

We’ll never know. France’s guns laws say you may not carry a gun unless police certify that you are “exposed to exceptional risks of harm” to your life. Few people even bother to apply.  That bureaucratic arrogance isn’t confined to France.  Here in the United States, that is the same way we treat the citizens of New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Baltimore and Washington, DC.

John – regardless of being armed -1500 people vs. 3 with guns. Yes some would be killed but the terrorists could have been overwhelmed.

Paul – more about the article. Stossel himself has been denied a NYC gun permit.

Rob- Someone might be hurt by self defense?  Reporters and academics want perfect solutions

3 There is more to Europe than Paris and Brussels

We saw an article from the website Czech Gunlaw that made a clear distinction between the European Union and the Czech Republic.  This distinction became stronger after the European Union proposed more gun laws following the muslim attack in Paris.  It might surprise you to know the Czech Republic has shall issue gun laws.  They own, transport, and carry semi-automatic handguns and long guns.   The Czech republic also has an unusually low rate of violent crime.  What sounds absolutely familiar is that the pro-gun website asked Czech gun owners to write their representatives to resist more gun bans from the European Union.

Does that sound familiar?

Rob- The Czechs have some odd ammunition restrictions, but the also started a competition modeled after IDPA.  Good for them.

John – The Czechs also has a good firearms industry. CZ makes some excellent firearms.

4- Wisconsin allows automatic knives

A Wisconsin man was arrested for possession of a switchblade knife.  The Wisconsin court ruled that knives are arms, and therefore possession is at least allowed in the home.

First, the State argued that the knife ban serves an important governmental objective by protecting the public from the danger of potentially lethal surprise attacks posed by individuals using switchblade knives.  However, the State cites no evidence to establish that this danger actually exists, particularly since the wisconsin man was arrested for possession of a knife in his own home.

The court found-

-That knives are no more lethal than handguns.

-That there should not be different levels of legal protection for different types of arms that all fall under the Second Amendment based on their popularity.

-That switchblades have certain advantages over guns and over other knives for some people.  For example, an automatic knife is safer than a gun or a fixed blade knife and can be just as effective. For safety reasons people with children may not want guns around the house.  People with limited financial resources who may not be able to afford a proper gun likely would be able to afford an effective $10 automatic knife.

-That for people who are excluded from lawful gun ownership, an automatic knife may be the most effective arm available.

-That whether one applies intermediate scrutiny or strict scrutiny to the switchblade ban, the ban fails such scrutiny, at least as applied to home possession.

Rob comment- this implies that my concealed carry permit should allow me to carry a knife as well, but Wisconsin makes it illegal to carry “a concealed and dangerous weapon”.

John- Nappen’s new book on knife laws?

5 Surge in concealed carry applications after paris attacks

The news media likes to frighten us.  They told us that bad people use guns.  This probably wasn’t the outcome the media intended, but a record number of us decided we want a gun since the world can be a dangerous place.  There was a record surge in gun sales and concealed carry permit applications all across the United States after the terrorist murders in Paris.  The application rate has roughly doubled.

Gary, have you seen an increase in students for your Illinois concealed carry classes?

Paul- We’re coming up to a break, but I want to say something about the news.  We try to bring you the highlights each week, but there are many stories we can’t fit into the podcast because there is so much to cover.  We do our best and apologize if we left out a story that is important to you.

Who has the gun quote?  How about you, (Gary)

Gun Quotes

We are advised NOT to judge all Muslims by the actions of a few million fanatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few dozen lunatics. Funny how that works.  Modified from the original Facebook

Hang on everybody, we’ll be back with our guest Jim Flemming.

6- DGUs
Our first four DGUs are all about a single person surviving the assault of multiple criminals — with the essential help of their own firearm.

1-eight against one in Houston

Two carloads of thugs stopped in front of a home in Houston, Texas.  Six to eight men piled out of the cars and forced their way into a nearby home.  A neighbor was walking down the sidewalk when the home invasion happened.  The neighbor walked towards the home, and one of the thugs drew his gun.  The neighbor was carrying concealed and he shot one of the robbers.  The other men left the scene and abandoned one of the cars.  The wounded robber died at the scene. The abandoned getaway car was stolen.   The one person inside the home at the time of the robbery was not injured.

Rob- This gun owner must have liked his neighbors..disparity of force

..evening the odds

Paul – is your six shot revolver enough?

Gary – My 8 shot 1911 wasn’t enough so I bought a 15 shot 1911

2-Four Against One in San Antonio
Four teenagers were in the process of turning their lives around when they were interrupted by a homeowner. Unfortunately, they were in the home of the owner — and the Texan was armed. Two of the robbers were arrested and charged with burglary. A third, sporting a graze wound to the chest, was remanded to juvenile detention. The fourth, a 19-year-old woman, died after pulling out a window air-conditioner and confronting the homeowner. Lest you shed too many tears, an open bag was found next to her with a gun, some burglary tools and a checkbook belonging to the homeowner’s wife. Police said she also had an opened knife on the floor next to her.

Police arrested the surviving teens hiding in a house a block away. They also found stolen items from the crime scene. “This is not the first time they tried to rob them,” police said. The two adult burglars remain in jail on bonds totally $20,000 each. This bail seems absurdly low for what may well become felony murder charges with the justifiable death of their female accomplice. The homeowner is not expected to face charges. Thankfully, the homeowner and his three children are OK, and trying to get over what happened.

3-Three Against One in Philly

A Philadelphia homeowner was forced to defend his life against three home invaders. Final Score: Homeowner: 2 — Robbers 0. Three masked males tried to rob a homeowner early in the evening, but a firearm allowed him to even the odds. The homeowner shot the 18-year-old multiple times in the chest and right side. His 15-year-old accomplice suffered a shot to the finger. The third suspect was not injured. Both the injured males were rushed by private auto to the hospital where they are listed in stable condition.

Comment: Use enough gun.

4-Two against one in Jacksonville, Florida

A jewelry store owner in Jacksonville, Florida was closing up shop.  He was locking his back door when two masked men tried to force their way in at gun point.  The three men fought and the store owner was shot in the arm.  The store owner got his own gun and shot one of the robbers.  The store owner then staggered to the front of the store and collapsed.  A security guard from a nearby grocery store applied a tourniquet and called police.  The wounded thief was dumped at a nearby hospital and died a few hours later.

Rob- comment- wear your gun

Gary – stay in the fight

Paul – first aid can save a life

5-One on one in Houston

A woman in her mid 30s parked her car at a Houston, Texas gas station.  It was about 6pm and she was still sitting in the driver’s seat when a man pulled open the passenger side door and and climbed in.  The man then pulled a knife and demanded her money.  The female driver promised the thief her wallet.  She reached into her purse and pulled out her gun.  She shot the robber one time in his left shoulder.  The thief ran from the gas station and collapsed a quarter mile away.  Police found the thief and evacuated him by helicopter due to severe loss of blood.  He is now listed in stable condition at Texas Medical Center, and is being charged with aggravated robbery.  The driver was licensed to carry a concealed weapon and police said the shooting appears to be self-defense.

Gary –

6-Utility Worker Kills Armed Thug

We’ve another self-defense incident from the annals of Crazy Town, also known at North St Louis. Several utility workers were laboring on water lines when they were approached by an armed man.  The robber took the wallets of two workers at gunpoint. He then demanded that the third get his belongings from the work truck. Fortunately, the victim had stored a handgun in the truck and he used it to defend his life and shoot the robber in the chest. Police said the 17-year-old criminal died at the scene.

The St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is investigating the incident as an act of self-defense and the robbery victim is not expected to be charged.

Listener e-mail discussion

This week’s email is from Rustie (that’s the way he spells it)
Hi Paul,
Longtime listener here. I salute you for all the hard work you do to put the podcast up, even while driving all over America. I figure there must be at least three Pauls, to get all this done.
I heard you say that you are having back problems and will transition out of driving truck. As a longtime back problem sufferer, may I suggest that you transition sooner than later. It may not get better at some point, and that will color the rest of your life’s plans and activities.  Even driving taxi or delivery may not be good idea.
You are a natural “radio” speaker and perhaps you can find work in this line.
Thanks again to all the participants at Polite Society. You are a great team and a valuable resource to the firearms community.
Best
Rustie

Paul: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

Rob- First the broadcast media hid the news of armed self-defense.  We are seeing gun ownership and concealed carry grow despite that distortion from the media.  Next, the anti-rights bigots lied about us.  My article about those distortions and fabrications is titled “Lies the Gun-Prohibitionists Told Me”.  My writing is up at Clash Daily, at Ammoland and on my blog slow facts dot wordpress dot com.
“What do you do after you have your concealed carry permit?”
“Lies the gun prohibitionists told me”

John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money

John- Over the last two weeks, the New York Daily News has been pushing to have those on the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Database aka the no-fly list added to the list of prohibited persons. They have used very incendiary front pages attacking the NRA with headlines like “NRA’s Sick Jihad” and “Nowhere to Hide, Jihadi Wayne”. I wrote about both of these front pages and have pointed out that any “suspected” person still has to get FBI approval before buying a firearm. The criteria for getting on the list is weak and the ability to get off is hard. What the Daily News and those in the gun prohibitionist community are doing is urging Congress to ignore the Constitution and especially the Fourth Amendment.

That and more is at only guns and money dot blogspot dot com.

We would like to thank Charlie Foxtrot for writing up show notes for us. Even though you don’t hear him on the air he is certainly part of what you do hear. Look at his blog at not one more gun law dot blogspot dot com

Paul: That wraps up another episode of the Polite Society Podcast.  I’d like to thank Jim Fleming for joining us today.  co-hosts, will you be with us next time?  I’m looking forward to it.  Until the next time…
Rob: stay safe,
Gary: be aware,

Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- I was at the Texas Firearms Festival with Rachel.  I bought a thousand rounds for my beyond concealed carry advanced class next week  in San Antonio..  booked my hotel room there too.

Rachel

  • Shield – rust in mag release
  • Austin Rifle Club – pistol drills

John – I hate to say it but I have no real gun-related news to report. OK, I did look online at a shotgun that I’ve been thinking of buying Barb – it’s a Mossberg 500 bantam with an extended mag tube and ghost ring sights. And something Charlie Foxtrot said to me this summer spurred me to start collecting parts for a Designated Marksman rifle. I got the handguard in this week. I’m trying to get the parts bit by bit when I find them on sale. Other than that, the end of the school and business year is fast approaching. Papers to grade and sales to make.

Gary – What training do you have coming up? I hosted what I thought was a great meeting of the ISRA Grassroots group we had a candidate for my districts state house rep the current rep is retiring. It was unfortunate that the candidate was uninformed on the issues…

I posted an article in the show notes entitled Does The World’s Worst Firearms Instructor Live In Fayetteville, NC? and I want to say if you are getting instruction and the rules of gun safety are being violated, get out and get your money back. Safe gun handling is fundamental and if they can’t teach that then you can’t trust anything else they teach.

Paris Terrorist Attack
Our thoughts and prayers are with the citizens of Paris. Mass violence has again come to a foreign country, despite the claims of our feckless President. Friday evening, France suffered a horrendous blow at the hands of Islamic terrorists. In a coordinated attack at six separate sites, ISIS terrorists with automatic AK-47s, grenades and suicide belts attacked diners, concert goers, soccer fans, and other innocents. 129 are dead, including at least one American, with some 350 wounded, 90 of those in serious condition. Paris is in lockdown, and France’s military is guarding the borders. One of the terrorist was a Frenchman already known as an ISIS sympathizer, another held a Syrian passport, and two were recently welcomed to France as Syrian refugees.

There are many lessons to be learned by those wanting to. Europe’s leaders ignored the warnings of what the unrestrained immigration by the largely young, male Arab refugees would bring. The leaders choose to follow their leftist ideologies, to the obvious detriment and danger to their own citizens and country. Likewise, Obama continues in his plans to bring an ever increasing amount of the same invaders into the United States. France’s borders were open – allowing the same attacks that America’s deliberately wide-open borders invite. Most telling to us: the French citizens were completely defenseless before the merciless killers. They had no way to defend their lives from the killers their own government sent amongst them.

This is just one of the reasons we fought so hard and so long to keep our Second Amendment Rights. We fight to allow The People to defend their lives and way of life, even when their government will not. Even when the President claims Climate Change as the greatest threat to our future. Radical Islam is the real threat: ISIS is now bragging “The American Blood Is Best, and We Will Taste It Soon.”  The People will need their arms as this new way of foreign and domestic terror comes to their towns. However, ISIS should be warned, our enemies have found that American blood leaves a very, very bitter aftertaste.

Anyone-   French citizens are largely unarmed. However, there is an active contingent of SASS International competitors in France. I expect they are ready to play Cowboys and Terrorists.

Rob- the attack at multiple sites overloads the security forces.  If you can smuggle tens of thousands of people across your borders, then weapons are easy to get.

John –

Anyone-  the paris police want better guns.

John – They have MAT 49 9mm submachine guns

NEWS 1.0 Demanding Mommies Fail at Politicising Gun Control

Gary- Bloomberg’s paid consort Shannon Watts and those Demanding Mommies immediately took to Twitter to politicize the Paris massacre. And they fell flat on their cupcakes. They blamed France’s lax gun control policies for allowing the AK-47s into the hands of the terrorist. Except… any half-wit could have easily found out that France bans most guns from its citizens. It is difficult for a Frenchman to own a high powered rifle, and the next thing to impossible to legally own a fully automatic AK-47. Those terrorists got their weapons into Paris despite France’s draconian gun laws. Those laws failed every bit as much as Watts and her Mommies. Back to the kitchen, toots.

John – I have more on this which I’ll discuss at the end of the show.

Rob- Everything is regulated in France.  France also has a secure border.. in theory.. but not in practice.

John – France is a remarkably regimented society.

Rachel- Greensboro Police Ask Residents to Turn in Their Guns and Sign a Peace Pledge

In what can only be seen as incredibly ironic twist, the day after the Paris massacre Greensboro, NC police are asking for their citizens to make themselves defenseless by turning in their guns. The first 1000 signing the Pledge of Nonviolence will receive a small gift. The pledge is available at the police website. We couldn’t find it, but it’s sure to be full of all sorts of kumbayaish goodness. It is not known if the pledge will be translated into Arabic.

John – This almost makes me ashamed to say that Greensboro was the town in which I grew up and spent my college years.

John – Looking into this a bit more, I’d have to say it is aimed at the African-American community. All the local news media played up the event in advance but only the local cable provider gave any “after-action” reports. It looks like a lot of people signed the pledge but only stuff like BB guns and hunting knives were turned in.

Paul – Small gift…. A free small coffee at Mickey D’s?

Rob – http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=36&recordid=7481&returnURL=%2findex.aspx%3fpage%3d1045

John- Hillary Clinton to Receive Gun Control Award
Speaking of insanity, Hillary will receive a gun-control award from the Brady Bunch. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence will present Hillary Clinton the inaugural Governor Mario M. Cuomo Leadership Award at the Bear Awards. The awards, named after Jim “Bear” Brady, will take place in New York City on Nov. 19. Tickets to the event are priced at $1,000 a piece. It is not known which of Hillary’s many non-accomplishments qualified her for this award.

John – If you want to be a bronze-level table sponsor be prepared to kick in $15 grand. It goes to show you that these gun grabber organizations are top-down. A real grassroots organization would want to get as many people there as possible. Maybe people in Hillary’s circle can afford $1K at a pop but most of us can’t.

Rob- John, that is some expensive dead chicken.  Hillary relates so well with us poor folk.

Rob- LA to Start Enforcing Mag Ban

Los Angeles will start enforcing its new standard capacity magazine ban beginning Nov. 19th. The LA City Council had voted to ban sales and possession of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. This includes magazines that had previously been grandfathered in.

On Thursday, a LA Superior Court judge refused to grant an injunction on the ban while a lawsuit brought by the California Rifle and Pistol Association and other gun rights groups goes forward. This case centers on whether the LA mag ban violates California’s preemption laws.

Backers of the ban say it will help curb the bloodshed of mass shootings by forcing attackers to stop sooner to reload. LA City Attorney Mike Feuer said, “The use of these magazines has so often led to tragedy,”This law will help prevent those horrible events in the future.”

John – The ignorance in that last statement is astounding. Perhaps he should go to either a 3-gun event or a IDPA event.

Rob- the magazine capacity limit didn’t slow down the Santa Barbara murderer.  Police can have standard cap mags, but we can’t.

Paul- Lawmakers in Brazil are Getting Smart

Brazilian lawmakers are considering American-style gun ownership laws that would allow Brazilians to arm and defend themselves. The country has a murder problem. Despite having over a 100 million less residents than the US, they have approximately four times the murders. They had 58,497 murders in Brazil during 2014.

“Brazil is an extremely violent country and the state has failed to resolve this problem,” the law’s author Laudivio Carvalho of the powerful Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, says in a telephone interview. “The population needs the right to defend themselves, their family and their property as they are the ones being attacked. Ninety percent of assaults are being carried out with illegal weapons.”

The bill introduces a right for people to own firearms for self-defense and for protection of property. It also reduces the age for firearms ownership to 21 and would allow citizens the right to buy up to 9 firearms and 600 rounds of ammo yearly.

John – This could sell a lot of Taureses!

Rachel Chattanooga Couple Stops Second Home Invasion in One Week

Late Sunday night, the Buckland family woke to the sound of shattering glass. The next day, they bought a security system — and a gun. Thursday night, the wisdom of those choices was confirmed in spades.

Two suspects used a tire iron to break through a rear door. Once inside, they ran to the master bedroom, spraying mace into the face of Andrew Buckland while demanding money. Jessica Buckland stalled, knowing her daughter was asleep in the next room and her husband was searching for the handgun. “My only thought was to get the gun and protect my family. Even being directly Maced in the face, my adrenaline was going so hard that I could see for about three minutes before it took effect,” he says. Andrew was able to find his gun and point it at the thugs, who took off empty-handed. That’s a successful defensive gun use, even without shots being fired.

The security camera recorded the two white teenagers. However, as of yet, police have not made any arrests. Officer Mark Frazer said; “Every person has the right to defend themselves. I think in these circumstances, there is absolute justification in feeling in fear for your life.” We join the police in complementing the Buckland’s coolness in a dangerous situation.

Rob- Chatanooga, TN.

Gary –

John – As an aside, this story also shows that less-than-lethal things don’t always work.

Paul- Elderly Miami woman shoots at attempted burglars (last story)

Our last story comes out of Florida. An elderly woman shot and killed her door in order to stop a home invasion. 88-year-old Arlene Orms fired her .25 caliber Beretta pistol into the door from inside, frightening the burglars away. This is the second time Dead-eye Arlene has been burglarized, the first time the crooks took another gun and several other items.

Police and neighbors worked together to restore the door. Their task was easier because the bullet did not go completely through. Neighbor Gladys Betancourt thought “It was awesome though.” Gladys also said “You have to do something, you have to protect yourself.”  Criminals should be aware that this is obviously a very tough neighborhood full of door shooters. After all, it’s Florida.  Hi, Miggy!

John- I have a couple of posts I want to point out. First, I came across an old Swedish rifle that was intended for training high school students in marksmanship. It was called the “School Shooting Rifle”. Imagine if you had named a rifle that nowadays. The second post deals with Twitter post from Moms Demand Action that referred to the terrorist attack in Paris as a “mass shooting” as to imply that if only France had universal background checks none of this would have happened. France – and Belgium for that matter – has extremely restrictive gun laws which license both gun owners and guns themselves. The full-auto AKs used by the terrorists are forbidden in both countries. I mention Belgium because some of the terrorists are thought to have crossed from there. The Moms, by the way, deleted that tweet having realized how stupid it sounded.

Rob- Went shooting with some new friends.  Signed up for the Texas Firearms Festival that is going on next week.  I also registered for a training course in two weeks.  I joined Dan and Cheryl Todd on their program Gun Freedom Radio out of Phoenix, Arizona.

John – I booked my room and flight to Las Vegas for the 2016 SHOT Show. I got some great advice on places to stay from Gary. Even with an upgraded room, I came in hundreds less than if I stayed on the LV Strip. I figure that could pay for a lot of taxi rides or even a visit to the Machine Gun Experience in LV. Now to start looking for a place to stay at the NRA Annual Meeting. For those looking for a place to stay, fellow blogger Tom at Daddy Bear’s Den has a guide on where to stay in Louisville – and where not to stay.

2-1 Thug’s family complains with the help of the Washington Post

After a long criminal record, Reginald Gildersleeve was just turning his life around.. again.  Last week we covered the defensive gun use where Gildersleeve wore a mask, walked into a small grocery store in Chicago, pulled a gun, and announced a robbery.  A concealed carry holder in the market fired several shots at Gildersleeve.  Now the criminal’s family says he didn’t deserve to die.. and why did he have to be shot more than once.  Their comments are getting play at the Washington Post.  The family says someone has to pay now that their brother’s been shot.

For the foggy journalists near foggy bottom, here are the rules.  If you dress like a thief with a mask over your face, act like a thief, and sound like a thief, then you will be treated like a thief.  If you look like you’re putting people’s lives in immediate danger with a weapon, then you can be shot and killed.. even if your family thinks you’re about to turn your life around.. again.

To be precise, the criminal was not shot too many times.  He was shot until he was no longer a threat.  Those are the same criteria used in either a civilian shooting or a police shooting.  Those are the real rules used in the real world.  Too bad the Washington Post is in its own little world.

CF – Mas Ayoob teaches that the most unloved, despised, waste-of-skin converted to room temperature in a righteous situation will have family members that haven’t wanted to see him in decades him rushing to court claiming harm and wanting justice. The type of justice that can only be had by folding money.   BTW: The CCW carrier will not be charged in the shooting. A good shoot – even in Chicagoland.

John – When you work in a building with security guards…

2-2 Ha-Ooooo, a sub-gun in London

Anti-rights gun grabbing politicians here in the US say we should adopt European models of gun regulation to make America safer.  Really?  Fully automatic firearms were outlawed in England in 1936.  Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns were banned in 1988.  England outlawed handguns in 1996.  That means an automatic loading gun firing a pistol caliber cartridge has been outlawed in England for at least the last 80 years.  Yet three police officers in London were shot at by a criminal who had a submachine gun.

Gary- You mean criminals don’t obey gun laws?

Paul- No, Gary.(snicker) Thugs don’t obey gun laws any more than they obey the laws against robbery and assault. (chuckle)

Gary- Someone had better let our chicago politicians know that gun control doesn’t work.. even in England.

John- The weapon could have been a glock 18, and that model pistol has been around for 30 years.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the British Bobbies who have to work on the crazy streets, and for the crazy politicians, of London, England.

Gary- I bet the British haven’t tried gun buy backs like Chicago.

(reaction)

Gary- That is called sarcasm, you guys.

2-3 Guns, Guns for sale.. from your local cop shop

It is hard to take the idea of gun control very seriously.  The anti-self-defense gun grabbers claim we could disarm honest gun owners and then criminals wouldn’t have any guns.  That might make sense if you only spent a second reading the headlines, but it is a failed idea if you read the next story.  Shotguns and handguns issued to police have turned up missing in an audit of the rural town of  Memphis, Michigan.  The small police department has had four chiefs in five years.

Criminals don’t stand in line for a background check.  They “borrow” a legal gun from a relative or another gang member.  Stolen guns are only 10 to 15 percent of the guns used in crime, but with a quarter million guns stolen each year, it is is foolish to imagine that criminals don’t have access to firearms.

John – I have read about “community” guns hidden in bad neighborhoods.

2-4  Where do thugs get their guns?

We talked about the gangs in Chicago, and how they borrowed their guns from friends and family members.  Let’s look a little deeper into that, and ask why the friends and family of the thugs are not prosecuted for giving guns to criminals. The gangs in Oakland use their single-mother girlfriends to buy guns.  The reason is simple.  Oakland prosecutors don’t want “baby mama drama” in the courtroom, so the women were rarely if ever prosecuted for straw purchases.

The same thing happened in Georgia where a 26 year old woman bought a pistol, spare magazine and ammunition for her felon boyfriend.  The boyfriend then murdered a pregnant female police officer.  The straw purchaser was sentenced to half a year of home confinement and parole.  That is why thugs get guns in broken Democrat cities.

The contrast could not be sharper when compared to the Pennsylvania police officer who bought a handgun for his father-in-law using his police discount.  The officer then had his father in law go through a background check at a licensed gun dealer.  The officer was sentenced to 5 years probation because it was considered a straw purchase. The Supreme Court of the United States agreed with the prosecutor.

This is why the NRA says we don’t need more laws, but need to apply the laws that exist fairly and quickly.

John – Tell me again how so-called universal background checks are going to keep thugs from getting guns.

2-5 Drug Enforcement Agency says drugs more dangerous than guns

The US Drug Enforcement Agency released a report on the dangers of drugs and self-medication.  They reported that 44 thousand people died from non-prescription drug overdose, and an additional 22 thousand died from overdose with prescription drugs.  That far exceeds the rate for fatalities from motor vehicles, drunk driving, and accidental falls.  Gun homicide and gun accidents barely made it onto the list of relevant risks.

Rob- I dislike Governor Chris Christie, but the Governor said we need to treat addicts with compassion and medical care, not with stiffer prison sentences.

Gary- Ok, so where are the billionaires funding drug treatment?

Paul- (Crickets)  No, they only want to disarm honorable citizens.

3-  News 2

3-1 Thank them when the media gets it right

We criticize the media when they get the story wrong about citizen self-defense.  That means we also have to say “thank you” when the media gives us fair coverage.  The Blaze wrote an article about the pro-rights organization, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership.  They quoted both Rabbi David Bendory and executive director Charles Heller.  Heller said, “The purpose of our organization is plain and simple: to destroy gun control. Gun control is poison, [its] that simple.”  Rabbi Bendory said self-defense and owning firearms are an inherently Jewish value.  Quote “God has given you the precious gift of life, and just like any precious gift, you have the responsibility to care for that and treat it with the proper respect… while initiating violence is not ever an appropriate thing to do, violence when used in defense of self is not only righteous, but a required responsibility.”

The Blaze asked executive director Heller why so many jews support gun control.  He said, “Jews tend to be legalistic…we tend to be law obeyers and tend to rely on law rather than rely on force, that’s just the way we’re oriented.. Most jews grow up outside a gun culture.”  Bendory added “There’s this stereotype of redneck, anti-Semitic gun owners.  Jews are very surprised by what they found [after I take them to a shooting range.]”

It is always good to hear from JPFO, and thank you to The Blaze for a fair interview.

Gary –

Rob- I’m reading Loesh’s book, Hands off My Guns

John – I just was reading about the IDF and was struck how multi-cultural it is.

3-2 What is an elitist anti-rights billionaire to do?

We talked about the money in politics last week.  You could argue that there is too much money in politics.. or too little money invested in political campaigns.  What you can’t argue is that anti-rights billionaire Michael Bloomberg has invested tens of millions of dollars to buy politicians.  Any sharp investor knows that a politician is worth much more when his party is in the majority.  Bloomberg helped put Democrat McAuliffe (MC-CALL-IF) into the Virginia Governor’s seat.  Bloomberg spent millions trying to turn the Virginia Senate from a Republican majority to Democrat control.  Despite his multi-million dollar spending spree on two state senate seats, Bloomberg failed in last week’s election.  The Virginia Senate remains in Republican hands as Republicans retained all of their seats.  This is important so that both houses can block Governor McAuliffe’s anti-gun regulations in Virginia.

John- Bloomberg has a terrible record at buying politicians.  He lost the Colorado Senate seat and the Milwaukee Sheriff’s race to name a few.

Gary- He bought some of the Colorado Senate, and he bought the Colorado Governor, John Hickenlooper.

Rob- Money talks, but so does citizen activism.

John – You forgot the attorney general of PA.

Extra- 3-2

-Four Wisconsin Democrats proposed sweeping firearms regulations last week.  Their bill would outlaw most semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols.  The Wisconsin Assemblymen released a long list of cosmetic features they want outlawed on firearms.  There is no grandfather clause, so existing firearms would have to be turned in or the owner imprisoned.  At the same time that there is federal legislation to legalize firearms mufflers, this legislation would outlaw any gun with a threaded barrel that could accept a muffler.

-A New York Democrat Congresswoman proposed a bill in the House of Representatives that would add a one hundred dollar tax on every firearm sold.  The congresswoman admitted it was a way to keep guns out of the hands of poor people.

We conclude these democrats agree with Democrat Senator Hillary Clinton and Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley.. and think gun-grabs will get them elected.  Well that didn’t work in Virginia, now did it.

-Who knew, but Oregon is still a state for gun lovers.  Coos County Oregon just passed a pro-gun initiative with a 60 percent majority of the vote.  The initiative declared any state or federal infringement on gun owners to be void.  The initiative also stops the county from spending any money on enforcement of gun control laws.. like the mandatory background check law the Oregon legislature passed this year.  Well done.

3-3 How is that gun-free zone working for you, Governor Jerry Brown?

Faisal Mohammad brought a knife to school at the Merced campus of the University of California.  Mohammad stabbed two students until a construction worker, who was working on campus, pulled Mohammad away.  The construction worker had to kick Mohammad repeatedly to avoid being stabbed again.  Mohammad then ran outside the classroom building and stabbed a female student advisor.  Mohammad ran again and was shot by campus police.

The construction worker said being in a knife fight changed his opinion on concealed carry.  He wishes he had a concealed firearm when the mass stabbing unfolded.  It was almost exactly a month ago when California Jerry Brown signed a law banning concealed carry on campus.  I doubt that new law makes any of the school staff or parent of a student feel safer.  It looks like Mohammad didn’t obey the gun free zone sign either.

Rob- Several unconfirmed law enforcement sources in Merced say the assailant was on a terrorist watch list.  The islamic terror group ISIS praised his attack.  It looks like federal, state and local law enforcement let Mohammad attack students while Governor Brown disarmed both students and staff on campus.

John- Elections have consequences but I fear the voters of California won’t heed this message.

News 3

4-1 NYT gets it wrong.. again and again

The New York Times reported that licensed concealed carry holders have killed almost a thousand people other than in self-defense over the last eight years.  The Times has used that number before.. and been corrected before.  How did the Times get their story so wrong.. so many times?

The Times takes its statistics from the Bloomberg funded Violence Policy Center.  The Times list of murderers also included any concealed carry holder who committed suicide, even if they did not use a gun to take their own life.  The Times did not include the fact that licensed concealed carry holders are 60 percent less likely to commit suicide than their peers.  They counted any self-defense homicide by a license holder as a murder until the case was adjudicated as self-defense.  The Times also added up each news report of a homicide, so a single shooting might be counted three or four times.

Using that method, a justified single defensive gun use might be counted as a murder each time it is in the papers, and only counted as self-defense one time when the grand jury gives their report.

The Times has been corrected several times before.. but they are not interested in using the truth when a lie serves their purpose of smearing honest and honorable firearms owners.

John – If they ever make a correction, you have to search to find it.

Gary –

Paul- The Zimmerman case must have been worth 200 or so murders

4-2 Self-defense news matters, because the media DOESN’T cover it.

This is our chance to thank our listeners.  We hear about it when a crazy murderer shoots children.  The media covers that event for hour after hour, and day after day.  Then the media and the gun-grabbers say we should ban guns because guns only hurt people.  This actually sounds reasonable to the average TV viewer because they get their news from the mainstream media, and the media never mentions the examples where guns save lives.  That is the pernicious bias of the news media against gun owners.  Let’s set the record straight.

This month, John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center collected 21 examples of legal gun owners using their firearm for self-defense.  Each example was covered by the local media, but none were covered by the mainstream media.  This distorts how the public views a firearm in civilian hands.  Hundreds of people might see the local news when a gun owner saves his family, millions of people see the national news if the gun was locked away and the murderer kills the entire family.  Those 21 examples from October are the ones you didn’t hear about where ordinary citizens stopped carjackings, bank robberies, delivery man robberies, and numerous assaults.

Gary – Thank you John Lott.

We only bring you a few of these stories each week, but we wanted our informed listeners to know how many self-defense stories were out there, and how important these stories are.  Thank you for listening.  Please tell a friend.

6- DGUs

6-1 A homeowner living north east of san antonio, Texas had a hard night this week.  There

have been over a dozen burglaries in the area, and many homeowners were spending nervous nights wondering if they would be next in line.  Each robbery involved a thief prying open a back door in the early morning.  This time was different.  This time the homeowner heard the intruder and armed himself.  The thief advanced until he was shot.  The police took the thief into custody and transported him to the local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the groin.  The police also found gloves, a pry bar and a head lamp with a red lens at the crime scene, and the articles did not belong to the homeowner.  Checking with local pawn shops, the thief had pawned a large number of objects in the last few weeks.  It looks like this homeowner stopped a crime wave.

6-2 Three armed and masked thieves entered Longs Jewelry store in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Two of the robbers waved guns around threatening customers and employees.  The third thief stood guard at the front door.  The thieves then smashed the display cases and grabbed the jewelry.  The store is family owned, and one of the managers took his own firearm and fired twice at one of the thieves.  One of the criminals was struck twice.  All the thieves fled, with the injured thief collapsing on the ground outside the store.  The two other criminals were long gone by the time the police arrived.  Medical responders pronounced the wounded criminal dead at the scene.  The dead man had two prior felony convictions for armed robbery in North Carolina.  A spokesman for the local district attorney’s office said the store owner acted in defense of himself and others so no charges would be filed.

Rob- That is a tough problem for a gun owner to solve.

Paul-

Gary –

John- Also under NC law, the family of the thief cannot sue the jeweler.

6-3 Elderly Man Fires a McLatchy and Scares Off Invaders

Hey, someone actually took vice-president Joe Biden’s advice! An elderly Utah couple opened their door Halloween night, not to a pack of sugar-crazed munchkins, but to four invaders pointing a shotgun and a rifle.  However, the homeowner was no Biden: he had a pistol on him. He drew and put one round — into the ceiling. That warning shot, know as a McLatchy North of the Border, shocked the invaders into dropping their weapons and beating feet. Score one, well: one half, for the homeowner.  He survived, but he does have a hole in his roof.

Gary will tell you that with his warning shot, the homeowner was likely every bit as dumb as Slow-Joe and his advice to “fire two blast outside the house”. Thankfully, the home-invaders were even dumber and panicked themselves into fleeing. If they had been a little smarter – or somehow even dumber – the situation could have quickly turned very bad for the owner.  With four armed thugs inside the home there is absolutely zero time for anything but direct action. The good guy has to immediately start evening the odds, and the criminals holding the shotgun and rifle would be excellent places to start. Wasting precious seconds, some very limited ammunition, and perhaps endangering an innocent in the path of the warning shot was not the thing to do.

Thankfully, it all worked out for the better.  We guess: better lucky than good.

John – There are a lot of good trainers in Utah and I’d suggest some training for this couple.

Paul – A great example of how not to do it.

Rob-

6-4   Love Beats 911
They say love conquers all — especially when love is armed with a self-defense pistol.  A San Antonio, Texas woman was grabbing her purse from her apartment when three suspects tried to rob her. She called for help – not from 911, but from her boyfriend – who got there a whole lot faster. In the confrontation, one robber was shot in the shoulder and one in the leg.

The suspects escaped by car, but investigators found them lying on the sidewalk at another apartment complex. Naturally, they claimed to be the victims of the robbery. The cops weren’t buying it, and the perforated duo will be charged with aggravated robbery. The boyfriend is not expected to face criminal charges. We suspect he will be rewarded in other ways for his timely and brave actions.

Paul – Call 911 as well!

John – Doesn’t Mas Ayoob always say be the first to call 911?

Rob- We post each of our news and defensive gun use articles at Polite Society Podcast.com  Please take a minute and share them with a friend.

John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money.

Last Sunday night I watched 60 Minutes and their report on so-called Smart Guns. It was what one would expect from CBS and the mainstream media. Among the interviewees was NJ State Senator Loretta Weinberg who was the sponsor of New Jersey’s “smart gun law”. Lesley Stahl asked her a lot of questions but it was the one that wasn’t asked that was important. That is, if smart guns are such a good idea and if police officers have often been shot with their own firearms, why is law enforcement specifically excluded from the requirements of that law? The answer is that cops like anyone with a modicum of commonsense don’t trust them to work when they need to work.

Seg 1- Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- I’m glad to be back with you.  I got to shoot at the Glock Range Day in Naples Florida.  Thank you to Glock, and to the Louland gun club for supporting the event.  I decided to shoot with my inside the waistband holster and from concealment.  I sent a letter to my congressman in support of bill H.R. 3799, the bill that makes mufflers legal.  I mailed in the last payment for my Louisiana concealed carry application.  Now I wait.

John – Between teaching and work including a benefits fair, I didn’t get to do much with guns this week. However, I should have much more time in the Spring as I won’t be teaching. The powers-that-be have decided I don’t have the right academic credentials to teach anything other than freshman level courses. This despite teaching a senior level course for 10 years, 18 years of real world experience, and my CFP.  It’s a case of credentials being considered more important than knowledge. While I’ll be losing my gun buying money, at least I’ll have time now to use the guns I have!

Like Rob, I’ve used PopVox to send a letter to my Congressman regarding HR 3799.

Rachel- Yesterday I directed logistics for an event called Wilderness Fun Day. This is an educational event that evolved from my core group of friends getting together informally to run medical scenarios. It’s now a well-organized community-wide event. We opened it up to 40 attendees this year. They were divided into 6 teams, and the teams rotated through training stations along a wilderness trail. The stations included Gear Hacks, Knot-tying, Fire-building, Splinting/Bandaging, CPR, and a few others. Each station also had a scenario to practice what the attendees just learned. I love running logistics and I love outdoor days, so this is one of my favorite events.

Gary – What training do you have coming up?

Paul – Conversation with Jason Christiansen. -Concealment Solutions – segmented show

I am going to insert a live promo about upcoming training classes here.

Pennsylvania restrictions

Elections have consequences.. even in Pennsylvania.  State Senator Art Haywood submitted a new bill to the state judiciary committee.  The bill requires residents to have a license in order to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer a firearm. In order to qualify for a license, an individual would need to be 18 or older, be a resident of Pennsylvania, take a class and pay a fee.  New Jersey gun control comes to Pennsylvania.. because gun owners didn’t vote..

John – Elections do have consequences. Right now Michael Bloomberg and other gun control groups are pouring millions of dollars into 3 Virginia state senate races to switch that body into a Democrat controlled, gun control approving body.

rachel

Rob- The bill should not pass in Pennsylvania, but it should get Senator Haywood some Bloomberg cash.

The Real Australian Model

Obama and Hillary have been pushing the so-called Australian Model of gun control, which is in reality a draconian gun ban and confiscation scheme. If they were honest (admittedly, a mighty big if), they might look to see how the Australian Model is actually working Down Under.  The Age, of Melborne, Australia reports that things are anything but peaceful. To quote; “Melbourne is awash with guns”

Senior police officials are warning of an arms race getting out of control. “There hasn’t been this much weaponry on the streets since the days of the underworld war,” the police source said. Their rivals are armed, so criminals are increasingly carrying guns. Glocks and SIGs are easily available via illegal trafficking networks. Smugglers are bringing in guns from overseas, principly from the Philippines. “This is really getting out of control.”

The black market rate for a new, unregistered semi-automatic handgun is between $8000 – $10,000. That trade is largely controlled by outlaw motorcycle gangs. Penalties are stiff, but only two offenders have been charged with trafficking guns since 2010. Only eight were charged with possessing a traffickable quantity, according to data from the Australian Crime Statistics Agency. Between 2011 and 2014, 477 offenders were charged with carrying an unregistered weapon, but only 23 per cent received a prison sentence. Australian civilians are also feeling the bite of the armed criminals; with increasing numbers of drive-by shootings, robberies and home invasions.

It all sounds distressingly familiar. So do the politician’s very predictable calls for more laws to combat the criminals that are ignoring the existing laws. It seems like the Australian style gun-control is as ineffective as the American version, and Obama and Hillary should know that. But then again, gun control has never been about guns – it’s about control.

Rob-

John- At the same time the gov’t is trying to keep the average citizen from having a 19th century designed shotgun – a lever action shotgun. They are calling it a rapid fire weapon.

CNN’s Sally Kohn Caught in an Anti-gun Lie

This hasn’t been a good week for the mainstream media: CNBC’s Republican debate moderators embarrassed themselves as blatant Progressive shills, and incompetent ones at that. The liberal media was exposed and damned by the candidates, audience and new media. Then, CNN’s commentator Sally Kohn also embarrassed the media with bald-faced lies.

Kohn’s hard-left politics are well known. She is most infamous for her libel of American conservatives, alleging they were worse than Islamic extremists. That indefensible claim came directly after the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks in France that killed 12. Kohn’s so-called analysis inexcusably ignores the 9/11 attacks that killed 3000 people. She also ranted several times about Christians and Jews for various non-issues.

This week she reported that 10,000 children are killed with a gun each year in the US. She used that figure to demand “common sense” regulation of firearms in the same fashion as cars and children’s toys.

The 10,000 children killed figure is shocking – and shockingly false. FBI crime statistics list only 1085 child murders by any means in 2014. And many of those death come from teens engaged in criminal activities themselves, like the drug wars that plague our cities. This gross exaggeration caused Kohn to issue a retraction and correction. CNN belatedly footnoted the column with this Editor’s note: “An earlier version of this opinion essay misstated the number of children killed every year by guns. 10,000 children are killed or injured by guns every year…” Even that corrected number looks highly questionable, especially when considering the source, the highly politicized American Academy of Pediatrics. CNN has said nothing else about their commentator’s excesses, nor their lack of even basic fact checking. Bad show, CNN. Bad show.

It must be said that even though this was a bad week for the legacy media, they’ve been bad for the truth for decades.

Rob- It must be an easy job to write for CNN when you simply get to make stuff up.  The CDC reported 505 accidental deaths per year from firearms.

Rachel- only way to combat erroneous data is through scholarly studies

Gary

Rob- 70 percent of counties won’t have a single murder each year.

Religious Freedom v. Gun Laws

A conflict between gun-control laws and religious freedoms is being played out in a federal court in Pennsylvania. An Amish man has filed suit because he wants to buy a gun without using a photo ID. The Amish faith does not allow the man to be photographed as this would create a graven image. Since federal gun-control laws demand a photo ID without exception when purchasing a gun, the man could not exercise his 2nd Amendment rights without violating his religious beliefs. A firearm is needed, as many Amish hunt to put food on the family table.

For decades the Amish have been fighting for religious exemptions, winning a landmark case in 1972, where the Supreme Court held that they could exempt themselves from compulsory education laws on religious grounds. However, courts have usually found that the benefits to the state of photographic identification trump religious principles. This case brings several legal theories into conflict, including the actual effectiveness of IDs that are handed out to citizens and illegal residents alike. If the Amish win in this case, gun-control laws would become a little less restrictive and most importantly, of lesser importance than citizen’s rights like the freedom of religion.

This is a very basic case of rights versus control, and it will be very interesting to watch. We must indulge our inner cynic in wondering if this case would have gone easier if the man had been a Muslim…

John – I remember Paloma at GRPC saying that the ATF turned down an Amish man in NY who offered to use fingerprints.

Rob – Can he wear a burka so his face is completely covered?

Brazil follows the example of Illinois and goes shall issue

The nation of Brazil is considering shall issue policies for handguns.   A bill stripping away current limits on gun ownership has already been approved in committee and is due to go to the lower house of Brazil’s Congress in November.

Under the proposed law, anyone over 21 could buy a gun.  This includes people accused of crimes or and people convicted of less than serious crimes.  They could purchase up to nine firearms a year and 50 rounds of ammunition a month.

State employees and public figures would be allowed to carry firearms at work.  This includes  government inspectors and politicians.  So would private citizens who work in public, such as taxi drivers.

At present, weapons can only be bought legally by people after obtaining a license.  Licenses are issued on a case-by-case basis.  Brazil currently has one of the highest murder rates on the planet.  Robberies and the gunfights between drug gangs shoot some 40,000 people each year.

Gary- 50 rounds month isn’t enough for training.

Rob- Are they trolling for Bloomberg dollars?  That would be awesome!

Do as I say, not as I do in Chicago

Speaking of gun free zones- President Obama went to Chicago last week and held the city up as a model to stop gun violence.  The city has some of the strictest gun control laws found anywhere.  There are no gun stores or firing ranges in the city, or the county it controls.  Chicago also leads the nation with over 2500 people shot so far this year.

President Obama again promoted background checks and a ban on certain style of firearms when he spoke at a meeting of police chief’s in Chicago.  Obama didn’t mention that criminals don’t buy guns at gun stores.  The president remained silent about the refusal of federal prosecutors to charge criminals convicted of violent crimes with a gun.  In several cases, repeat criminals convicted of gun crimes served less time than citizens who inadvertently violated a firearms law.

Police chiefs are appointed by elected mayors and city councils.  They applauded the president.

Moms against gun free zones.

Frequent listeners know that most mass public murders occur in gun free zones.  The wife of an Indiana congressman noted that all the mass murders in the last six years were in gun free zones.  Christy Stuntzman  is a teacher and a mom and says some colleges are not safe for her children to attend.  Many colleges are so called gun free zones, and these colleges don’t protect students and staff, but endanger them instead.  She started the facebook group Moms against gun free zones. https://www.facebook.com/momsagainstgunfreezones/

Rob- I notice the growing cultural split in our country.  We have liberal politicians promoting gun free zones.

John – I should note that her husband Marlin is probably going to run for the US Senate in 2016.

Rachel- it’s about marketing

Rob- Rachel, you go to schools and churches.  Are they gun-free zones?

Idaho School buys rifles and trains faculty in the use of firearms.

One school district in Idaho is joining a number of schools that are bucking the gun free zone trend. Garden Valley school district, outside of Boise has purchased 4 rifles and has had the local law enforcement training teachers in their use. In an interview with Boston’s WBUR

The district superintendent was asked if there is an element of danger in arming teachers. his reply was  “Teachers have the option to be a part of the training and be a part of the trained staff, and we have a detective who has come in to help us with all of our training and has done a great job with getting the teachers and administrators on board understanding the seriousness of what the weapons can do. It’s a respect value. We’re taking teachers that know and respect weapons to help with securing the facilities. It’s not saying, ‘hey I’m going to take a teacher that doesn’t want to be a part of it or doesn’t feel like they could make those decisions in those moments,’ but the local county sheriff’s department participates in the training so there’s a collaboration between us so we can at least get things situated and under control before they get there.”

Rachel-my goal: not for everyone to carry a gun, but for everyone to have the opportunity – the information necessary to make a rational decision and the training necessary to feel confident to defend himself.

We can’t escape from danger. We only try to create the least dangerous situation that we can.

Rob-

If you want a gun in Austria, you can’t have it.

Austria is an anomaly among the European Union in that Austrian citizens may own several kinds of weapons.  Break-action shotguns and airguns are unregulated.  Semi-automatic handguns, rifles, shotguns and pump action shotguns are available with a permit.  At least they were.  They aren’t now, because the Austrians bought them all.  They emptied the shelves of guns and ammo.  The influx of violent muslim immigrants into Austria caused a run on self-defense firearms.

In Britain where self-defense firearms are illegal, the surge in islamist violence has caused a run on cricket bats.

Rachel- Now I know what to send my european friends for Christmas.  They want ammunition!

Paul- 9mm is always in season.

Rob- You can own a bow in Austria, but hunting with a bow is prohibited.  I don’t know what the Austrian police think about broadhead points on arrows.

Too much money in politics? – Last story (insert any other stories before this)

Paul was perusing the internet this week and came across an interesting infographic relating to political spending. You often hear that there is too much money in politics and it certainly can seem that way just before election day however according to the Institute for Justice we spend more each year  on Halloween than we do for all federal elections in a presidential election cycle, and that only happens every 4 years.

Developing Situation in Colorado Springs  (This one should go last because of its immediacy)
We have breaking news from Colorado Springs: Three people are dead, along with the perpetrator who left a trail of crime until stopped by good people with guns. Information is very preliminary, but the spree apparently started with a house fire set by the deceased criminal. A bicyclist was murdered a few blocks away. Witnesses said the man was firing an AR-15 as he continued down the street, killing two more apparently random victims. Police caught up to the madman outside a fast food restaurant, where they fired perhaps 20 shots to stop the rampage.

Our thought and prayers are with the victims, family and friends.  Unfortunately, we’ve had to start our stopwatches to see how long it take Obama and Hillary to politicize this tragedy. We remind all that last week a woman used her car to kill four people at an Oklahoma State homecoming parade. Like the car, the firearm was a mere object: like the driver, it’s the madman who was at fault.

Rob-

Gun Quotes-  This week’s quote is from Colonel Jeff Cooper.  “If you round up all the guns, you’ll still have a criminal problem. If you round up all the criminals, I promise you, you won’t have a gun problem.”  Hang on everybody, we’ll be back with our interviews.

Podcaster’s Father Critically Injured in a Home Invasion

We’re saddened to report that Terrell Prudé, father of the creator of the excellent Liberal’s Gun Corner podcast, has been critically injured in a home invasion. The 83-year-old was attacked by four men, who broke his neck and left him for dead. He lies paralyzed in a hospital and is not expected to live much longer.

Prude has lived an accomplished life as a professional pianist. He has guested on his son’s podcast and shared several tremendous stories of defending his life and family with firearms, squaring off against racists and robbers. This time, with his limited mobility, he was unable to reach his firearms to once again save his life. His son is bravely using his father’s tragedy to emphasize the need to stay armed at all times. A gun out of reach is of absolutely no use in a sudden, deadly situation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with C. Terrell Prude, Sr. We wish his son, C. Terrell Prude, Jr., podcasting as Cowboy-T, the peace and strength he will need in this heartbreaking time.

Stay armed and stay observant, these are dangerous times.

Chicagoland Robbery Thwarted by CCL.

There must be three, four or more layers of unpossibilities in this story: a felon who somehow actually had a gun, who was unaware of the many gun laws  he was breaking, inexplicably committing an armed robbery, and being unprecedentedly stopped by a CCL holder, all in the gun-controlled paradise of Chicago. The mind just boggles. [Okay, Turning Sarcasm Down from 11]

A Saturday night stickup turned deadly for the armed robber of a Southwest Side convenience store. The criminal pulled a handgun and began threatening the store’s employees. When he moved to take a female employee into the back – usually a very bad development – one of Chicagoland’s few CCL holders drew his legal possessed weapon and opened fire. The thief was fatally injured.

Both store employees and the CCL holder were unharmed. The legal carrier’s decisive action reversed a situation that has proven fatal to many store workers and customers in the past.

Florida Man Time
A Jacksonville, Florida pizza delivery man successfully defended his life when assaulted by two armed robbers. When the criminals demanded money, the delivery man used his own firearm to wound one. There being no honor among thieves, his buddy left him lying in the street.  The wounded man has been hospitalized in critical condition.

There is no information if the driver will face criminal charges himself or if he will be disciplined by Domino’s Pizza for carrying a firearm on the job – and living because of it.

Rob- Would you like Lead with that order?

Rachel- Question for Gary: if you were training a student who was a pizza delivery man and wanted to carry on the job, would you recommend any additional or different training than normal?

Gary

Paul

Rob- Gary, you said know the law.  That is different than knowing company regulations.

Three Enter – One Exits

A late night armed robbery resulted in two deaths — the robber’s. Three masked men entered Latino’s Meat Market armed with at least one pistol and a stun gun. Sometime during the robbery, two employees fired several shots from their own guns, striking two of the three masked men. The third suspect was able to run out of the store with an undetermined amount of cash. One thief died at the scene, the second at the hospital. The third remains at large.

No employees or customers were seriously injured in the incident. One employee did have a cut on his nose, but did not require immediate medical treatment. Reading, Pennsylvania police say it appears as though this will be a case of self-defense and the shootings will be justified. However, the investigation is ongoing and the final decision will be made public at a later date.

Woman Attacks Former Boyfriend

There’s more than a little truth to the ol’ saying about a woman scorned. Lakisha Knight, 35, carried a handgun when she broke into the home of her former boyfriend. In a struggle with the male resident, Knight was shot and killed. The 63-year-old man suffered minor injuries. An 11-year old boy also in the house was uninjured.

“The shooting remains under investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the results of the investigation will be provided to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for a decision on whether or not criminal charges are warranted,” the Virginia State police spokeswoman said.

John – This is also a warning to all men about dating much younger women.

Man Defends His Life and His Case of Beer

“Oh, [bleep], he has a gun, too!” That was a Florida Man realizing he could be getting something a lot hotter from the man than his case of beer. Walking up from behind his intended victim, convicted felon Wilmar Jolteus, 32, pointed a gun at Tyrell Owens’ head and ordered him to “Give it up.” Police praised Owens for immediately moving (we’d call it Bustin’ Off the X) and seeking cover behind a wall. The hood fired at least two rounds as Owens drew his concealed handgun and returned fire. The felon was hit in the left leg and right butt-tock and fled, stumbling and falling his way to a waiting Mercedes SUV. His confederate dumped the wounded thug outside an emergency room. There, police arrested the criminal, adding one more to his string of eleven South Florida arrests.

Jolteus was charged with first-degree attempted murder with a firearm and attempted robbery with a weapon. Owen will not be charged. The police report praised Owen for his coolness under fire and his tactical sense. It stated that Owens’ death was prevented only by his superior tactical positioning and return fire. However, the victim is scared for his safety in case the suspect or his friends returned to the area for revenge.

On the means streets of Orlando, Mr. Owens will need to keep his wits about him — as well as the pistol he already used to save his life.

Indianapolis Restaurant Offers Discount For CCW Carriers

After Art Bouvier’s restaurant was robbed, he didn’t do the common thing and resort to Gun-Free Zone signs. Rather, he reasoned that the best thing he could do to protect his employees was invite more guns in – guns carried by law-abiding, licensed concealed carriers. So, diners at Papa Roux will receive a 25% discount, as long as they are dining with a CCW.

“I don’t want Papa Roux to turn into the O.K. Corral,” Bouvier said, “but I don’t want to be an easy target.” Bouvier announced the discount offer on his Facebook page shortly after learning of the robbery. “If thugs are going to come in and threaten OUR extended family with guns, you’d better believe I will use every trick I know to protect (our family),” he wrote.

We commend Bouvier for his hard sense in effectively making his establishment the safest one in the area. Any thief with a lick of common sense will now be patronizing the other eateries protected by Gun-Free Zone signs and unicorn wishes. 2nd Amendment supporters are now filling the tables of Papa Roux to show their support. In addition, noted gun blogger (and hardcase) Tamara Keel frequents the area; ne’er do wells should take note – for their own protection.

Rob- The restaurant is in Indianapolis, but might do carryout.

Paul: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

I condemned the editor at the Washington Post after he called for a “gun free society”.  A gun free society is where the weak fear the strong, and the few fear the many.  We would all depend on the state for our protection.  The police would be first responders rather than second responders.  That vulnerability and fear isn’t a fault for the anti-gun bigots.  That fear is a cherished feature.  Fear will unify our dependence on the state.. and our obedience.

Rob- Clash Daily.  Ammoland.  Slowfacts. That is at slow facts dot wordpress dot com.  John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money

I did a post responding to criticism of the Hearing Protection Act by Ladd Everitt of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. It was called, “That’s Why It’s Called Capitalism, Ladd”. He said that the only reason that the NRA and suppressor manufacturers were pushing the act was, get this, because they “were potential profit areas.” Excuse me but I thought a business was supposed to make a profit. Ladd also tried to say that removing suppressors from the NFA would have “obvious consequences for safety”. On that I agree with him but not in the way he means. It would mean that hearing is protected which to me is a good thing.

That and more is at only guns and money dot blogspot dot com.

Rob-

Paul – I want to bring up a post John wrote just today about Ted Koppel’s book.
